The Joker, Batman's arch enemy, has played a key role in the Batman movies with his green hair, white skin and an evil, permanent smile. In 1989, the Joker, played by Jack Nicholson, became an icon who was a stone-cold killer while maintaining the persona of a humorous prankster. In 2008, the Joker is revived and played by Heath Ledger, and depicts an embodiment of evil and anarchy out to prove the absurdities of the wold, with no empathy for anyone.

alot of voters wont remember jack nicholsons performance as much and will still be buzzin from heath's. even if jack was better, he couldnt win it. ask the question 20 years down the line for a better indication.

Its really unfair to compare the two because Nicholson played the laughing gas Joker while Ledger played the unpredictable crazy Joker. There is such a degree or originality and craft in Ledgers performance that it is almost joker like madness to have any opinion other than Ledger is the better of the too. Nicholson is a very fine actor, but the Jocker he palyed was only amusing; lacking the depth and focus of Ledgers. The Jocker of Ledger gave him a goal; to tarnish batman by proving that order and virtue can be tainted. The prior jocker was simply mad.Heath Ledger, the Joker

This is my opinion:I watched Jack Nicholson's performance on the old batman movie many times... and yes.. he was 'the joker'... but his character represents only "joker as the villain" or "batman's enemy".. simply just that....
But in the new batman movie, joker was played by Heath Ledger and the focus was "what makes joker the villain"... what's on his mind... what are the things he is capable of doing... etc... in other words.. focusing on joker's personality... that what makes this movie more interesting for me.. esp. when he said that" BATMAN completes him".. and he don't want to kill batman anymore.. (hahaha joker loves batman)...
Ledger's performance is very good... and better...
but we should also give credit to the directing staffs... because what we are comparing now is not only the 2 actors but also the movies themselves..

Don't get me wrong, Jack Nicholson put on a hell of a performance as the Joker... But Heath did such an amazing job at showing what a true villain is like... You could tell they started out the movie revolving around Batman, but started to use Heaths' SPECTACULAR performance to an advantage, and made the movie more about him... Heath definetly captured the spotlight in this one. "The Dark Knight" is the best Batman movie produced in my opinion, great job Hollywood.Heath Ledger, the Joker

They both were good technically and should not be compared because each piece had a specific flavor it was trying offer.One movie was comic book whimsical (Jack Nicolson).
The other movie (Keith Ledger) was sort of a real life version of what the Joker and Batman would be like.
My favorite Joker was Keith Ledger!

hem hem.... i think the jacky man looks a slight bit creepy.... he looks like one of those billy puppets from SAW :S but i think i would go for heath supa man! cuz he owned at being he ganked at being wild he def mastered the villains of villains... and most of all he mastered reality in films which i haven't seen for so long lolz i used to watch the batman cartoons when i was lil i used to buy batman toys.... i used to be such huge fan... but now heath comes along and says "why so serious?" and dah dah dah he tells you his silly made up story about his massive scars that his so called alcoholic father cut him for being so serious -_- seriously hilarious hem hem....but i really don't like one thing from the dark knight...it was too much of this fantasy i wanted it to be like a realistic film.... i didnt want batman to run about punching and smashing every single criminal til their skull splits with blood.. i was expecting to have like normal people lol well.... i think i is done here have a great day peopleHeath Ledger, the Joker

Although i really feel Heath took over the role as the joker and completely outshined jack....i agree "diffrent times"....jack as the joker was kinda fake and more of a italian mob kinda thing...it wasn't like a real VILLIAN....a VILLIAN is suppose to be some psycho who wants to see the world burn into a million pieces not a goofy clown with a smile on his face who wants "money"... money is not the objective of a villian....complete hostile takeover is.....hands down Heath all the way!!!! classics can only beat the milli in certain cases......Milli thanks for the new improved JOKER!!!!!
