Text Messaging Soon to be Lost to Google Talk?
The thought of text messaging going out of style is almost frightening, but like most other trends... its just a fad. Text Messaging plans cost a lot of money each month, or per text message, but with new phones like the iPhone and Blackberry, new technology will arise. Many people have already started using mobile programs such as Google talk, which allows users to talk to each other for free, if you have access to internet, and its just as simple, if not simpler than texting.-

Answered Texting won't go out of style until pigs can fly.
Texting is useful for occasions when you don't literally want to talk to people, or want to say something only quickly, or when you are unable to talk on the phone (i.e. talking about someone in the room next to you). The only thing is that the traditional texting over the phone network will probably go out of fashion as wifi enabled mobile phones allow you to connect to msn as they already do or other chat programs, and therefore you will be able to text to your friends for free. But this is still texting none the less. -

Answered Down with texting... Google is going to take over the world!
people should use google talk it's free. Then texting won't cost because no one will be using it. Then it will be a selling point to give free texting when you buy a phone or it will be less expensive.. -

You always want texting, because when someone is not answering their phone, in a meeting, or on another call, your text message shows up on their screen, and that way you can get your short message to them right away. If not, a lot of people don't listen to their messages right away, and a text message gets them your message right away. Also, sometimes its easier to explain your thought in text than trying to explain it over the phone. It gives your recipient time to think about it before responding. Texting is great, and vital to business and important urgent communications. -

...and then something else will come along and that will be the next big thing. Call me an old fuddy duddy, but I hate both. I prefer to actually talk to someone when I have something to say. It takes me 90 seconds to finish a conversation that it takes my wife 45 minutes to have via text with one of her friends. -

Not every one can get IM programs on their phones so texting is more universal and will therefore never go down. I personally like instant messaging but i know people who can't so I still text. -

You have to load the Google app and leave it running... which is a drain on your battery and system resources. I have a pocket PC that runs Windows Mobile 6. I've installed Google Talk and AIM and rarely use either. Texting is just more convenient.
Unless Google plans on building a program to replace texting altogether, I don't see it dying anytime soon.
