Beijing will offer toilet paper to tourists. Is China ready for Olympics?
Beijing's notoriously foul-smelling and poorly tended public toilets will feature some rarely seen luxuries during the Olympics. The city has made a special effort to clean up and adequately stock more than 4,000 public toilets as part of a camapaign to make bathroom breaks a "pleasant experience" during next month's Games, the China Daily said."Beijing is working hard to make every public toilet a pleasant experience for the millions who visit the city for the Games," Yu Debin, deputy director of the Beijing tourism bureau, was quoted as saying.
Chinese public restrooms have long been a source of fear and dread for many visitors to the city.
Besides being famously smelly, they typically lack toilet paper and soap, fail to flush, or feature Asian-style squat toilets that are anathema to many foreigners.
But in 2005 the city launched a campaign to upgrade its more than 5,000 toilets for the August 8-24 Olympics and the subsequent Paralympics in September.
The capital has installed a large number of Western-style toilets to cater to foreigners, the physically challenged and elderly, the paper quoted Guo Weidong, a Beijing municipal administration commission spokesman, as saying.
About 8,000 workers have been trained to keep public toilets clean, he said, adding: "Public toilets reflect the living and hygiene standards of a society."
The toilet clean-up is one of series of "civility" drives under way to smooth some of the city's rough edges during the Games.

Answered Yes. Just don't make the toilets get dirty like ones on county parks.
If Yu Debin is telling the truth then I will say that Beijing is ready for the Olympics but not the rest of China. Although there are parts of China that are very modern and look like any city here in the US. -

I think China will make sure that these are the best organised games. Although I am against the dictatorship that exists there sometime it helps in getting work done. I think the Beijing Games will be the best organised in the history of the olympics. And I absolutely hate that -

I think much will be revealed to answer that question. It's a matter will the mainstream media report or focus on it? I doubt it, we are in hock to those guys and the big corporations that own the networks will not rock the boat. It's gonna be an eight week lovefest. -

they will catch up....but, the real thing is will they keep them cleaner and more hygenic after the Olympics? And what is the health condition of the people in China who use these facilities before the cleanup?....it cant be good....getting into China is harder than before because of the problems they are having with Tibet and protesters who they fear will disrupt the games (trying to keep more out) -

A lot of our pollutants come from China via the air. It is really a bad situation over there and it is causing problems worldwide. -

Why worry about the proliferation of brown splatter and lack of hygeine? After all: Grayish-brown rain falls from the sky, coating the entire city in a bizarre soot. Leaves on trees in the countryside are covered with gray grime. I mean, it is *grimey*.
Unless they seed storm clouds with "Joy Dishwashing Liquid" for a few months running up to the games, there's no way they're gonna clean up all the filth.
If they manage to do it, this will be a miracle of public relations deception ... quite a stunt. Maybe they'll pull it off: clean up some areas of their country for a few weeks' show.
I guess they could do it... I've done it... like when I was a kid, my mom would tell me to "clean my room" and I'd just shove everything under the bed, and cram my junk into the closet. Yeah ... "clean" ... heh! -
raves +2 Jul 15, 2008 03:25PM GMTthey are actually planning on shutting down local industries for the olympics...do a massive cleanup etc....but, after the games...the factories will start up again....and will they keep up with sanitary conditions after...did you see the algae problem they are having now? its massive and its right where the sail boat racing is to take place, people practicing have to have someone constantly clean it off the rudders

No toilet paper
No soap
Poor breathable air
Vast air, water, and land pollution problems
Plague of locusts
Bright green algae in the water
Visa problems
Human Rights issues
... and the Olympic Committee STILL thought that Beijing would be a lovely place to host the Olympics? What were they thinking? -
