War and Peace
Excerpt from "Songs of the Soul" by Sri Chinmoy

Man invents war. Man discovers peace.
He invents war from without.
He discovers peace from within.
War man throws. Peace man sows.
The smile of war is the flood of human blood.
The smile of peace is the love, below, above.

Peace is the whole truth that wishes to enrapture humanity.
War is the whole falsehood that wants to capture humanity.
Peace begins in the soul and ends in the heart.
War begins in the mind and ends in the body.

War forgets peace. Peace forgives war.
War is the death of the life human. Peace is the birth of the Life Divine.
Our vital passions want war.
Our psychic emotions desire peace.
War is clear futility in dire spear-stupidity.
Peace is flowing infinity in glowing eternity.

Man seeks war when he thinks that the world is not his.
Man invites war when he feels that he can conquer the world.
Man proclaims war when he dreams
That the world has already surrendered to him.

Man seeks peace because his earthly existence desperately needs it.
Man welcomes peace because he feels
that in peace alone is his life of achievement and fulfillment.
Man spreads peace because he wants to transcend death.

The animal in man wars against peace in the outer world,
in the world of conflicting ideas.
The divine in man wars against ignorance in the inner world,
in the world of mounting ideals.

The animal in man wants war for the sake of war,
war to devour the snoring world.
The divine in man wants peace for the sake of peace,
peace to feed the hungry world.

The Great Eternal Silence By Aquinas T. Duffy

Missing in the darkness,
vanished without a trace,
with only the memories and photographs,
to fill an empty place.

Frequent prayer and fervent cries,
is there anyone there?
But the only sound
was the silent eternal fanfare.

For a long time
its deafening sound
subdued by a path
through lost and found.

Laughter and sorrow,
anguish and grief,
all the moments of a life
but with no relief.

Everything and nothing
one within and between all,
gentle, loving, pervading,
the eternal silence falls.

Sometimes, we do not hear answers to our prayers, only apparent silence. But within that silence, there is always more to be discovered.

Time slipping through my fingers like sand

The days pass. My fingers sift strange moments from the passage. Faces seen. Emotions glimpsed. Conversations murmured as though on the wind. I have opened up the moment within myself, but, in so doing, have managed to overwhelm myself with minutiae. There is a need for balance in my life. I often get caught up in my own personality. How better to describe this? I hear things that people say to me or about me to others and feel somehow beholden to these descriptions. I feel circumscribed by the voice from without. I suppose this is a rather ordinary description, but it coincides with my understanding that the moments of presence which I've been bringing to the world have been directed mostly outwards. Here. Here. Here, I can reestablish that connection through which I am able to understand myself and the world around me in a distinctly quiet manner. The tapping of the keys is a light balm to me. If you are not careful, the world slips by. There is only one life to live. If you are unable to grasp that life, then you have lost the possibility of actualizing yourself in the present. Do you see the small gestures in your life which give it its overall meaning? Can you pick out those tidbits of information which guide you through the darkness of the world? Have you ever lost your way and wondered how you will ever find your way back to the middle road? I do. I can. I have. But, what of it? Well, perhaps it is only enough to say that the sand passing through leaves a mark. It is an invisible mark, but a mark nonetheless. Perhaps because it is invisible, it is that much more significant. This invisible mark of the passage of time is none other than the thought of its passing. I feel time move through me. I feel time move around me and I know that the words I use to describe myself are being transcribed in time. I am making my invisible mark upon the world. What is there more to do? How can I hope for more? I see you looking here, looking there. All of this looking amounts to nothing.

"Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. Since you did not warn him, he will die for his sin. The righteous things he did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. But if you do warn the righteous man not to sin and he does not sin, he will surely live because he took warning, and you will have saved yourself."
