Wedding day : Is it about the couple of their families?

I was talking to someone today who told me that weddings are more about the families than the couple itself.

What are your thoughts?

ps. Ugh, typo, I meant to say OR not OF.

I would have married my hubby behind a Walmart if I had to.....but his family were all over it...so we had a wedding.

Weddings are more about the couple getting married. Well to be completely honest it's about the bride and how big she wants her wedding to be. Guys don't care about the ceremony they just want to be with the one they love.

It's about both. Planning weddings can be very tricky! The bride (and groom, if he cares a lot) should have most of the say on the wedding plans, but they also need to be flexible so the family members who have strong feelings about the plans (usually the Mom's) can have a little say in things too.

Weddings are all about families, a day that most parents and their kids who are getting married have dreamed of for a long time.

Because the couple unites the families. It's about having witnesses to your vows to one another and a declaration of the union of the two families. The couple does have fun, but I think that if you make it all about the couple, it won't be a good wedding I think.

It's really both. I'm planning my wedding (hence the ~17 days~)
Yes, the day is about the couple and celebrating their love and whatnot. But, it is also the joining of two families - which is why many ceremonies include a unity candle or sand ceremony.
It's important to remember that while it is YOUR day, and things should be done the way you want, that there are other people involved with real feelings and real emotions. You can still celebrate your day your way without hurting anyone's feelings in the process.

It is kind of both. The couple should be the focus, and I would hope their wishes would outweigh those of the spectators. That being said, the wedding ceremony and attendant activities also function to form a bond between the two families.

I think it's all about the bride to tell you the truth. I'm in the middle of planning a wedding right now and I'd say it's all about one person (and that person definitely aint me).
If it was about family I would hope that was intentional and not the family taking over that day to put the focus on them

It is a celebration of the love between the two people getting married - Ten bucks says you were talking to a mother of the bride or groom - mothers always think everything is about them

I think that they day is all about the family. In the grand scheme of things, you can still get married without the ceremony.

it is a gift given from one to another
the family and community are merely members of the community and witnesses - a necessary evil* (evil - in the mildest sense of the word)
