SodaHead Celebrates Green Week

Sodahead a warzone?

I first discovered Sodahead when furthering my research of the potential presidential candidates. I was intrigued with Sodahead as unlike Myspace, I can have open dialogue with those I disagree with and would be educated in different positions. But lately it seems as if everyone (including myself) have been sucked into this war of words and how many raves you have and so forth. I used to come on Sodahead to release steam and to get my political conversation fix but now it has become a political nightmare. Is this what the country is all about?

I do admit that I too have spent many long hours neglecting my husband to come on and try to have civilized discussions as well as educate and be educated... but does anyone come on to be educated anymore? It seems people have turned this site into a gang zone where people send their friends to gang up on one Sodahead because of their views in the name of patriotism. But how is persecuting one for their beliefs considered to be patriotism in a country that was founded by those escaping this very act?

I realize that I too am guilty of some of this behavior and have wasted way too much time on Sodahead debating in useless debates. A lot of this is due to my move from Los Angeles away from all my family and friends. It's been such a difficult transition for me because I come from a very big family and we are so very close. My husband has a schedule which isn't conducive to mine, leaving me alone in a rural town where I obviously don't fit in. Perhaps I was spoiled in Los Angeles with all it's diversity and excitement and being in a place like Ocala is not stimulating, to say the least. That's why we are finally doing the big move to NYC. Not only is my stepson there but I will once again be in a city that is alive and assorted with many types of people. A rural town is no place for a city gal hence the long hours on Sodahead.

Though when I come on Sodahead, I want to learn and teach. I am a student at heart which is why I chose the teaching profession (for now) rather than pursue a career in Law. I love education and all that it entails. Although law is intriguing, it's not as rewarding as teaching a child to read or teaching children the many places in the world and what it would be like to visit these places. I come on Sodahead to take on both roles of the teacher and the student. But lately it is so filled with hate and venom that I have wondered what ever happened to the fun place in which I released my steam? Why has it been the place that causes annoyance?

If you want to be the Messiah of raves, go for it. This is cyberspace, you can be whatever you want. If you are not being fulfilled in your daily life as to come on and find some type of acceptance then who am I to judge? More power to you. If you want a win on Sodahead, then I will gladly give it to you. I would rather win in my husband's heart and the hearts of the children I teach. If you feel like you are a better Sodahead, then be the better Sodahead. I would rather be a better person in the REAL world rather than the CYBER. So I guess what I say to all those that want to continue a war, continue it if it makes you feel good about yourself. I prefer a more meaning way of gratification through my career and humanitarian work. I prefer to use Sodahead as a place to exchange interesting viewpoints and educate and be educated and of course meet new friends along the way!
You!

It seems like there are two different groups of people around here when it comes to political discussion - One is those like you, and like me, and like most of my sodafriends, who actually do want to discuss things, listen to opposing points of view, make the occasional joke but overall try to LEARN from each other. The other are people who seem to treat the site as more of a video game than a means of communication. It is either posting the same knee jerk response on 100 different questions (such as the "list of why Obama is a terrorist" that gets posted EVERYWHERE), or simply trying to drown out anything remotely intelligent with a dozen asinine asides. I try to ignore the second group, but there are times when it is difficult to avoid, especially when a poll has comments to comments all over the place and you can't tell who you're responding to after a while.

As for the rave thing, I guess that's harmless. I find it a little silly when people post polls that say "I need only a few more raves to reach X,000 raves". Kind of makes the whole thing meaningless. At least to me.

I guess there's not much that can be done about it. I would think that after being ignored for a while they would go away, but there are always more waiting in the wings.

Im glad people get to be themselves here.I agree with you some people need to grow up on this site.It says 18 or older but I think I have encountered some underage profile, just block them or report them.I know sometimes it is hard but you be the adult and just come to do what you came to do.Just have fun and get your view across, and those who are nasty are probably nasty and alone people in real life.Isnt that payback enough!

I think some that are physically eighteen and older don't always act it.

I do believe in karma and most often it is the lonely that harbor more hate than many...

Thanks for your response. It is very good!

Yes, many harmless behaviors are harmless but when paired with all the other nonsense, it just further illustrates my point of people turning Sodahead into a cheerleading contest as to win the highest score. Who really cares?

I just want to get back to basics and use Sodahead as what it is designed for, a website to discuss opinions, not a school playground.

Well, unfortunately there's no way to ban everyone who says something stupid. When you try to do private polls and blogs (like this one) there's no way for anyone new and unstupid to join in. Alas, I think just ignoring the stupidity is the only thing we can do. Not to mention supporting each other's polls and comments, even when we disagree. I've occasionally gotten "come to my rescue" emails from friends who get deluged with stupidity, and I always try to help when I can.

Well thanks for the heads up, now I will be sending an email your way... LOL..

I must say, I have thoroughly enjoyed your most recent comments. You do handle yourself well. Keep it up. Don't get sucked in as I was. At least now I am aware of my own behavior and can back off. I think we have to be aware of ourselves as well when pointing out the problems :)
    (that sounds so teacher-esque, huh?)

Thanks. Since you're moving to Queens I have to be extra nice to you, neighbor.

I'm FAR from perfect about this stuff. sometimes I do lose perspective simply because I can't accept that someone could be THAT stupid. Yesterday I had a running argument with some kid who believed the moon landing was a hoax. He claimed to be a "scientist" but not only did not have the slightest understanding of physics but even misspelled basic scientific terms like "vacuum".

On several occasions, when I post something reasonable and instead of getting reasonable disagreement I get "you're a stupid jerk because you believe A instead of B", I simply post "Thank you for your opinion" and then refuse to reply to any more of that person's posts. It seems to shut them up fairly well.

LOL.. I actually suspect the moon landing was a hoax, though I'm no scientist, just a sceptic. But that's a whole other topic :)

Yes, I also don't understand when people leave comments and then block you as if to appear to have the last say. Then they follow you around Sodahead making comments, trying to befriend your friends, and so forth. That is the kind of behavior I am trying to detach myself from. I would rather be the adult than have the win. In the end, maturity supersedes all childish behavior :)

If you really want to go there, have fun, but keep your tongue in your cheek the whole time:

    http://www.sodahead.com/quest...

As far as blocking, I have tried to not block anyone, since I'd rather hear and ignore a stupid comment than sink to that level. I've only made one exception, and I even told him before I blocked him that I did not want to block anyone, but his response was "F*** you go ahead and block me" so I did.

    No, I'm over that debate.

I only block when someone has OBVIOUSLY insulted me with foul language and name calling. I don't block simply because I can no longer argue my point.

But If someone blocks me, then I return the favor. I hate playing the blocking dance, you know, when they block unblock and block. And I am loving the new downrave feature. Now people can't send other Sodaheads or open fake accounts to downrave. Though I am sure they use them for upraves.

Whatever makes them happy. I'm not going to judge.

Oh... I replied on your page. What a dodo I am! Sorry, it's early and it's the first time I wrote a blog on Sodahead...

You can erase that comment. I will cut and paste and put it here.

I think Hillary did more for Latinos than any of the candidate. But Mccain is far worse than Obama. For one he is on a ridiculous tour of the Latin Americas to promote free trade (NAFTA) which obviously does not benefit the people of Latin America despite what people here believe. The Zapatistas fighting to abolish NAFTA and we got Mccain showing up as it's poster boy. To me that is not exactly for Latinos.

And I don't only choose a candidate based on what they will do for my people, but for the good of the U.S. as a whole. I also vote based on their positions, Mccain wants to continue this war, I don't agree.

I can't think of a reason to vote FOR Mccain.

Actually ALL of my comments have to be pre-approved... I guess it trickles over to blogs as well :)

I usually don't befriend those with agendas. But my friends (especially my top) have been friends from Sodahead day one. So I am pretty happy with their friendship. It is those that are obviously at war with me because they don't like my position or my job or what have you.

I see your point, but I would rather take my chances with someone who is at least adopting the rhetoric of changing NAFTA than someone who is waving the victory flag of NAFTA. At least one we can hold accountable.

Tell me your reasons on voting Mccain.

I'm actually a liberal independent. I don't always vote Democratic and I am not married to the party, but when it is as crucial as this election, I will vote Democratic.

Not liberal Republican, LIBERAL INDEPENDENT. Meaning I voted Ralph Nader in 2000, I would have considered Ron Paul if he represented the elephants but never am I to consider myself a Republican.
