    I like this word more.

Both are industry terms, and don't translate to a general audience. Bands use "merch" when referring to their cds and shirts, and the only people who use the word "swag" are marketers and the people they are giving swag to. Swag also specifically means free stuff. So use "merchandise" or "stuff for sale."

Bands and crews use 'swag' for merchandise as well, though. Marketers aren't really the 'only' people using the word swag.
But yeah, technically, I also think 'merch' or at least 'merchandise' would be more appropriate if it refers to 'stuff for sale'.

Swag sounds cooler, but unless you're in the industry, you have no idea what it means. That being said, I'm not entirely sure anyone would get that "Merch" is a reference to merchandise, however, its a helluva a shorter stretch.

Hence, my decision goes with "Merch"...

Swag = (s)tuff (w)e (a)ll (g)et... So it depends on what it is. Swag is free stuff with branding on it. If you have to buy it, it's merch.

Just came across this on the internet:

"The chief difference between swag and regular merchandise is that its purpose is not to make a profit, but to promote the band/label, and reward its supporters by giving them something cool and unique."
