Master debaters or just morons?

Perhaps I am a little late to the game. Of course I already knew there were supposed "gangs" on Sodahead especially right before the election. However, I thought with the coming of election day, this would soon die out and people would go back to enjoying each other's views absent of the "You libs" or "You cons" attacks. Yet the Presidency has already been determined and we are now experiencing a new political era and still people are so divided. How is this country supposed to become strong when there is so much hatred towards one another. If Sodahead is any indication of how the country is interacting, we are in trouble. Doesn't anyone believe in the saying, "United we stand, Divided we fall?" Aren't we the UNITED states or are we just conservatives/liberals, Republicans/Democrats, legal/illegal, etc.

What is happening on Sodahead is shameful. People don't even allow for a sharing of views because the moment you call them out on their hypocrisy, they label you with some blanket statement as to why you may think a certain way. Our country is not falling apart because of some "illegal" problem or the "spending" problem, we are falling apart because we are abandoning our Democracy/Republic. We are persecuting each other for our mere opinions. When people gang up on each other and decide to bestow such baseless insults, it only elucidates just how disconnected we are from one another and thus are not as "United" as we are expected to be. To me, the most unpatriotic thing one can do in a Democracy is to persecute people for their mere opinions. Here on Sodahead, people are robbing the spirit of Democracy in the name of Democracy. Can you say Hy-po-cri-sy?

Furthermore, why are people so weak minded that they have to join a gang in order to feel powerful? I'll admit, many of my Sodafriends are like-minded people whom I enjoyed the way they articulated their opinion. However, if you research my Sodafriends, you will find many who think polar opposite than I do. If you check out my raving habits, you will discover that I rave people I don't even agree with if they conveyed their thoughts in a intelligent manner. But I see others writing blogs, deriving polls, blocking, and leaving vicious comments based on the will of some Sodahead gang. I have seen Sodaheads I have never even encountered rave insulting comments merely because the commenter is in their "gang." I have seen blogs aimed at bashing a fellow Sodahead because the blogger is furious at loosing a debate. How is this intelligent debating?

I am calling on all Sodafriends and Sodaheads, to try and rid Sodahead of these toxins. Let's not continue to allow them to take over our beloved debating forum. Conservatives, Liberals, Republicans, Democrats, etc. don't allow these wicked individuals continue to poison our site. Many of us enjoy the art of debate and we want to continue to do so in an intelligent manner. We should all unite and take back our site!
You!

I agree that ganging up on people because of their opinions or beliefs is wrong.

I disagree that we should suddenly change our views because there has been an election. I still have the same opinions and beliefs after the election as I did before and it would be dishonest of me and I would have no personal integrity if I tried to pretend I think that Obama is suddenly experienced and full of integrity and has half a chance of getting our country where we need to be.

Hey, I only jump in somebody if they jump me first.....I've never blocked anyone, and don't intend to do so.......as long as someone talks to me in a civil manner, I'll be the same with them.......

I wish others possessed this same etiquette. One particular Sodahead blocks people and then creates hateful blogs about that person. *shakes head*

It's too bad somebody does something like that, but it does happen....I had a stalker on here for a while, she'd follow me to polls just to argue, until she was caught red-handed one night.....I haven't heard from since.....

Some like to bait you just because of jealousy or envy at your superior debating techniques. I say, let' em envy! I'd rather be envied than envy!

You have a point, but I think in her case it was something else...this person would follow me from poll to poll, all the while claiming it was me following her, until she messed herself up and was caught in the act.....she was a little off in the head.

perhaps because of my own family which has a conglomeration of opinions and attitudes but i appreciate that people have their own world views and they are valid for them. we are created differently and have different biochemicals discharging in our brains and in other parts of our bodies as well as different life experiences. if we see the 'other side' as a priori good and not evil then perhaps we could jump skip and play rather than ostracize and vilify the other. however, since the first cave dwellers left their caves and ventured forth to form communities there have been differences which have led to death and mayhem, so why should sodahead be any different.

Why should Sodahead be any different?

Because these people scream in the name of Democracy but the hypocrisy is killing Democracy and thus killing our country. Everyone is so easy to find the nearest scapegoat that they can't imagine that perhaps the country's issue is they themselves rather than some exotic issue.

I believe we can live in harmony. Europeans do it. Why shouldn't we? Oh wait, we are too afraid to be labeled as Socialists to be social so instead we adapt anti-social behaviors and continue to destroy Democracy in the name of Democracy. :)

It has always been my opinion people start the name calling/bandwagon jumping/bashing when they have run out of intelligent and insightful things to say/write. I am friends with people who think the polar opposite of me and when we discuss things like religion and politics we manage to do it without the blanket name calling/bandwagon jumping/bashing. I can have a civilized debate with anyone I disagree with and I am more open and receptive to their view points even if they are not going to change mine if the person I am talking to/writting to can do so without all the aformentioned name calling etc. Perhaps if we all spent a little more time listening/reading/watching all sides of an argument instead of news sound bites with all the poltical analyst chatter on both sides we would find we have something to learn from each other, more effectively debate, and not have to name call/bandwagon jump/bash each other for having different views.

I'm beginning to think that certain people are not interested in learning from one another. Instead people would just rather try and pound in their own opinion without digesting the other's opinion and seeing if there is a happy medium or even if the other's view might make more sense. People are too arrogant to learn anymore. It's not the school system that fails them, it's their arrogance!

I don't really think it is arrogance in as much as it is fear. It is the fear of ones core beliefs/ideas being shaken by the introduction of a new concept/theory/idea. One has to get over that fear to be open to learning and growth. When you get over that fear you can have civilized conversations because as I stated before you stop the name calling etc. because you actually have something to say, credible statements to back up your point of view or argument. It is interesting how circular it really is, the more you learn, the more open you are to other points of views, and the less you fear the world.

I agree but it is not so unusual. Birds of a feather and all that.

It amuses me that the Congressional GOP members are crying out about not being included in legislative efforts. Currently the Dems are being much more inclusive than the GOP was 8 years ago.

Here on SH, I do find that there are many polls that are so slanted as to not allow for intelligent response from someone who might disagree. To me, that is racist/hateful commentary and I downrave such "polls."

If we can't discuss important topics of the day (please, no more Twilight stuff) here in cyberspace, where can we do so?

    Good comment.

I came on to Sodahead a little over a year ago in search of some type of intellectual discourse. For the most part, I found it. But the closer the election, the more vicious the discussion. I wrote it off because it seemed like everywhere I turned people were "fired up." :) However, some of these people have continued the hatred and that is what I don't understand. So I second your question. Where can we find intelligent discourse?

I think the Congressional Republicans are setting a bad example for their followers and I suspect that their behavior is a reflection of their leaders. What ever happened to setting a good example? Is everything taught in grade school being thrown out the window in the name of politics?

I can understand that. I just think whistling the same tune (koolaid, Koolaid) even after the election is just becoming so tiresome.

I'm sure you don't do that but there are plenty who do. As a matter of fact, I think you may be one of those of whom I speak of who think differently than I do politically, yet we are Sodafriends. :)
