This is the reason that my avatar is that of the statue sitting in the Jefferson Memorial. But, people in the 20th Century 'knew better' and passed Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare for the POOREST in the country, Welfare for the RICHEST in the country, Welfare for those in 3rd world countries, a permanent military-industrial complex, Food Stamps, Federal Housing, Perscription drugs through Medicare part D. And if we got rid of almost any of those, the people would throw a fit for not recieving their entitlements.

Ya know. I often wonder if Jefferson was thinking of himself as a slave owner when he said this. The man wanted the US to outlaw slavery, but when it wasn't he felt that to maintain his 'status' and be competitive as a plantation owner, he had to continue owning slaves.
I wonder if he was thinking of his relationship with Sally Henson, and their children.
But I am sure he saw the dangers of having government be the 'god' we looked to for fulfillment of our daily needs and wants.
Trusting the govt. to provide us with out needs, is crazy. The govt. should only provide a certain measure of protection to our borders and laws within the borders. Thus giving us each a chance to become and to do for ourselves. PERIOD.

There is no free lunch. Somebody pays for it, and it's always the taxpayer either directly or indirectly. I've never seen the government give away anything except salaries to those who purport to represent us.

Have you ever noticed that poor people are more likely to share what they have? The rich elite that rule never have to wonder where they will sleep, what they will eat, or what will happen to their children.
I have had money and I have been poor. I can tell you; more people come to my door now that I am poor, hoping for an odd job or a handout (and they usually get something if I have it)....actually, when I lived in an "upscale" neighborhood, nobody ever came around because the better off generally won't help, and some even call the police.
Big government seems to work the same way.

Yes, you are right - what I said is a generalization, but I do know some who give most genrously to get their name on a plaque, tax breaks, public recognition - some of those were "friends" who watched a relative cope with disability and homelessness....just shook their heads and wandered away.
I am glad to say that all people are not the same as those.

The government always tries to take too much power. They "know" what's best (if not for us, what's best for them... at our expense). The govament then tries to tell us other things, like, hey, we just gave you "free" healthcare, but now you can't eat cookies, or we're going to force you to buy it, because they have to force you to pay for it if they try to give it away "free."

I once had a roll of toilet paper like that I stole from Alabama Governor Bob Rileys house... still had that newly printed Treasury smell to it.

If the government is big enough to give you everything you want then enjoy it while you can... because a slave can be given everything they want or need one day and the next day they get their foot chopped off and 40 lashes with a whip because what your master has to give you is nothing compared to what he can take from you.

Thank you Marlow. This is a very good prophetic statement made by one of our founding fathers. Government should not have the power and authority to give everything the people. The only way that would work fairly is to divide up the sum total tax revenue and give equally to the population. That is the essence of socialism. That sort of power over people does not allow for the rights and prosperity of the individual. Individual gains are reduced when divided into the shared population. The spoils of one's labors are no longer for the individual earning it but for the government to take away to disperse to the rest of the public. In other words the government has a stake in the individual's prosperity and can seize those assets if necessary "for the good of the masses."

I believe that what Thomas Jefferson meant was, If the people let the government get so big as to be able to give you all the social services you want or need, and you will not need to want for anything,then it will also be powerful enough to take what it wants. I believe that if the American people let that happen then they deserve what they get. The down side of that is the ones that didn't vote for that particular admin. will also suffer. So it's kind of like buyer beware.
