Since coming on to Sodahead, I have heard the term "Freedom of Speech" being tossed around whenever an abuser wants the freedom to insult someone without any consequences. Although I am a firm believer in "Freedom of Speech," I do think that when that "Freedom of Speech" includes harrasment and/or persecution because of someone's choices, noone should have to endure this behavior. A person has the freedom to continue on with their abuse if given an audience, however the person that the abuser chooses to attack does not have to subject themselves to anymore abuse; hence the block feature.
Many people have abused the block feature. Many have silienced people for merely differing in opinion. I frown upon those that have done so, however I would not cry out censorship as what is my freedom to state my opinion is also their freedom to choose not to hear my opinion. I have been blocked for a mere differing in opinion and I believe it to be cowardly especially by those that continue to distribute vicious lies about me around Sodahead. But if they are given an audience and the audience is ignorant enough to believe them, then that is no longer my problem but that of ignorant and the choir.
When blocking someone because they attack and harass, then the block feature is necessary as it will prevent even more chaos. If someone cannot convey their opinion absent of insults and accusations, then they no longer deserve to have the privilege of debating with me. What is even more mind boggling is how hypocritical people can be as to harrass someone for their mere opinions (which is of course is UNPATRIOTIC in a Democracy) and then be upset when you make the gesture that you no longer will give them an ear for their abuse. Isn't it my right to choose who it is I want to listen to? When I am blocking, I am not taking away one's right to express themselves, just taking the ability to express themselves to ME! If you take away my right to refrain from receiving insults, wouldn't this be a violation of MY rights?
I am a fan of "Freedom of Speech" as I am a fan of blocking abusers. Of course, people should not block for a mere differing in opinion and I have not done so as I enjoy a little differing in opinion. Take a look at my friendlist and see how many I differ with in opinion. Yet, when the discourse becomes hostile and abusive I should not and will not tolerate it any longer. I will utilize my right and block those that cannot debate in a civil manner. I think people should learn to express themselves absent of harassments and insults. If one cannot do so, I will exercize my right and not continue to listen!

Girl, as you know we back different candidates but I have always found you to be fair and open to a discussion. I defended you vigorously against the idiot in one poll as you probably remember. I have blocked many people on here generally when their one and only issue is race and because I don't support their candidate they call me racist. I have lived most of my life listening to the words of Dr. King when he sai I have a dream that my 4 little children will grow up in a world where they are judged by the quality of their message rather than the color of their skin. Racism between any race is just unacceptable to me and I just refuse to deal with it. But you remain one of my SH friends because of the quality of your words. I do however use the block feature when I give up on a person as someone who has no quality and who wants to argue over one issue and forget that others do not see the world through the prism of their eyes.View thread

It gets mis-used and abused..as does the DR, still, with all of the criteria that they ask for when you do it now. Again, go figure!
*LOL*
Very well stated and very true! Kudo's to you!
We are not a democracy...
We are a republic...
Democracy is marked by the majority opressing the minority...
As much as I do not like people that are any race supremacists, I do reserve their right to say what they will...
The issue I had with what we discussed was the fact that the people in question were protesting to grant 1/3 of this country to Mexico....
And I brought up the other thing to explainhow I was being consistent with my view...
I find when people do not want to hear from the side that is opposition to their opinion/views, it is because they have doubt about their position. And sometimes they are just ignorant followers. By stating your opposition to their side, you are casting doubt/fear in their minds. I for one like to hear the opposition because it just lets me know that I am right. :0)
Did you get my message? So when will you be flying to NY?
I enjoy hearing the opposition as well when they are worth hearing. However when one continues to insult or uses irrelevant information rather than state their issue, they are proving themselves an unworthy opponent.
