SodaHead Celebrates Green Week

Question SodaHead

Did you know that you are paying to be on Sodahead????

Connie November 03, 2009 22:06:24

I understand that Sodahead made 1.6 million dollars last year. (Or thereabouts) And if this is true, now I know why.

I just spent the last week decorating a house for a client, and haven't been on here much while I was doing that. But interestingly enough, the websites that I visited are now advertised on every page that I've been visiting on this site today.

In other words, this site is tracking where we go when we aren't on this site. Believe it, or not?
I believe...I've seen it with me.....
Oh, bull hockey Connie, you're imagination is as great as your decorating talents....
Who cares, anyway?
You!

SodaHead uses ad networks like Google to serve ads in order to make the money that pays for the servers, software developers, etc...

Google and the networks try their best to bring you relevant advertising.

Guys probably don't want to see tampon commercials and girls don't want to see jock itch ads.

It happens all the time. Ads show up all over the place for sites where I have shopped or browsed products. Tough to keep up with all those cookies.

Our computers are doing a lot with something called cookies. You can delete them. The same thing happens when you (for example) visit a site to check a discount air fare. Each time you leave the site and then later go back the price is slightly higher. The site reads your computers cookies and then determines that you are probably a serious potential customer so they squeeze you for a little more. I once compared prices on a certain pair of shoes online and then saw them on every site I visit that does advertising for a week or two. It's pretty slick on their end because it got me thinking about buying those shoes for a lot longer than I would have been. Spooky.

If they want to put adverts on the side rather than charging me for the service, all well and good.

Oh, bull hockey Connie, you're imagination is as great as your decorating talents....

I don't see how they can track where you're going. They either have connections setup before you even login or you're just going to other websites that advertise here on Soda Head. Those other companies who wish to advertise on Soda Head have to pay to use Soda Heads site to advertise and that's how they make their money. Nothing wrong with that. It's business.

Then you are living in the dark ages...because they can, and they do.

I'd like to know how to do it with my own company....but I'm not as big....

Any site that generates revenue from ads operates in much the same manner. Googleads is content based and as such will gear advertising based on the information on the page you are viewing. Tracking cookies are also used in the same way. SH is not the first nor will it be the last.

Cookies. When you visit a site they drop a bit of info on your hard drive. Modern server software can detect that and 'assign' any ad that might be appropriate. I've notice sites doing this for over a decade. It's not unusual.

I use Google Ads on my sites too. It's context sensitive and based on the content of the page, not what someone looked at previously. I suspect that the OP has adware.

Do you want SodaHead to charge for usage? The site uses ad networks like Google to serve ads appropriate to your internet usage that the networks track -- SodaHead doesn't provide them with any personally identifiable information.

they market advertizing to you depending on what you type into search engines and i no longer care cuz i ignore advertizing anyhow. They never know how to market to me anyhow cuz i think way out-side-a the box.

HI Burst My Bubble: You are missing the point a bit....it doesn't matter if you think outside of the box or not. What matters is that a private company has the ability to track your moves on the internet. It's a bit intimidating, don't you think?

who says its sodahead and not your search engine thats tracking you. I never even look cuz they market anti-aging adds to me cuz i'ma female -n- 40 and its insulting to me. It happens of soundclick.com to so i think its my search engine.

i don't know - i guess they are marketing what they think 40 year old women want. They'd be better off marketing fast food at me - cuz everytime i see a tasty looking burger or burrito - i end up eating there in the near future. Advertizing is neccesary to maintain capitalizm.

Since I read this question I've noticed I keep seeing ads for funeral services and life insurance.
Food ads rarely influence me. Unless it's something important like the McRib or a new sandwich at Subway.
