Question Music

With CD sales dying down lately, what could the record companies and/or artist do to encourage you to buy?

i think it should be all of the above, the artist should care about their fans because without them, the artist wouldnt be anything really, just another joe shmo. some fans are poor and can't even afford to buy the cd.

My favorite band, Angels and Airwaves has this website called ModLife where you can pay a small monthly fee and hear their albums, see live footage and videos. I think this is a great idea because they are still making money and getting their music out there. Unfortunately, nothing is going to stop people from downloading music because it's free

    Include exclusive making-of DVD

or perhaps including a guitar pick with the band's logo or having one of the band members sign the cd booklet

i dont feel the artists or record companies should have to try extra incentives to get me to buy an album if i like the artist or a song on the radio thats all the incentive i need to buy it its the internet thats killing the industry they make it way to easy for us lazy americans to sit on our ass and download it personly i like to listen to the whole album so i always buy them

    10-cent DRM-free downloads and I'd buy a heck of an 70's and 80's collection.

    How about:
Include some GOOD music on the album ?!

    Let's face the fact ...
New artist releases one single, single hits the charts, album is released as soon as possible, sounds more like a 12 - 15 piece remix of the first single.
If you can find 5 or 6 interesting and DIFFERENT songs on one album, then it's nowadays almost worth buying it because of it's uniqueness on the market.

Don't hesitate to incorporate fresh ideas while producing a record and try to fit in those surprise effects, sending shivers up and down the listeners spines, and you won't have to wrap the album in an XS-sized shirt nobody really needs.

I think free crap with new artists that don't have a fan base would be good but I don't like most of the new artists! Akon is one of the only ones I like a song on and I bought his album to support his career! I shouldn't have because I hate Eminem, and hope his career is ruined soon! The new people as a general rule don't have any substance...it's like kindergarteners wrote their crap!

And I usually only buy their greatest hits CD's because I want to like all the songs not just a few. That is why I prefered to by singles, which I can't buy anymore.

    Unique artwork and large booklet

I still enjoy having something tangible when I buy music. I like seeing the pictures, lyrics, history, etc... It adds much more to the experience than great music alone.

The artists can care about their fans without offering physical goods packaged with the CD, but you make a great point by connecting with the fan using "all of the above" options. I like music and artists much, much more when I feel emotionally attached to it, and these tools offer that opportunity more than a downloaded MP3 file.

Combination of things... first of all, albums have to increase in quality. Most artists solely focus on singles, and have a bunch of filler songs on their records. Back in the early 60s, we were in the same scenario we are now (in a sense). People didnt buy albums, they bought singles. Then The Beatles came along and put out records where every song was good, and the market switched from a singles-based market to a album-based market.

In addition, I think that the music industry has become so corporate nowadays that they are in large part to blame for the singles market. All they care about is 1 big song to make them money. Artists don't get the light of day if they dont make a record with a hit song on it... sometimes artists need time to develop, and unfortunately record companies cant see this.

What the industry needs is a record company that cares about music as much as they now care about money. It needs a company that is willing to invest time in a band without seeing immediate profit. It needs people who are emotionally invested in projects (bands). Maybe then people will start buying records again.

I completely agree with this. Especially since you can download an album off of iTunes. More of a profit is made by the company, artist, etc that way because there is no physical item to make (ie the actual cd, the paper cover art, the jewel case, etc)

Well they could take out itunes forcing people to buy the whole CD instead of the singles. Or find a way to prevent sites like Limewire from accessing songs for everyone to download.

    Neither will happen though ;]

I buy a lot of cds. Right now I'm really into Cream I recently bought their live albums Live Cream and Live Cream, Volume II they came out in 1970 and 1972! I listen to a lot of old stuff I also like Pink Floyd especially Wish You Were Here. I like new stuff too like The Killers, Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, My Chemical Romance. I like old and new music.

I actually don't buy very many CD's, however the ones that I do buy I buy because I admire and respect the artist. I will also buy CD's of artists that I've "just discovered" in order to get them to make MORE cd's! :)
