all of these come into play and mind. really cool question. if I really fall in love with an artist, i will usually look into all the aspects of what they embody. the weirdest thing is when you find a band that is totally underground like "He Dreams Awake" and there is nothing to find out about the person behind the music except for that it is just one person and he is really intense, so i guess image and attitude means a lot, but the mind and thought and probably #1 THE MYSTERY behind the artist making the music is what usually drives me over the top..
Most of the tings above can make a band ekstra cool...
But also their stage performance is a big deal!.. The attitude on stage can make you love their music even more:)
I personal feel its what the Gruop or Artist puts into the Music you can Tell if it Really Heartfelt. And how Deep they Are be the amount of Engery this Song Puts OUT when you Hear It!
Dedication. A Band/Artist can't last without the fans, their the ones who buy the records, who go to shows, who sometimes dedicate themselves for the Artist/Band in street-teams etc.
If they taken for Granted then that Artist/Band will not survive. But if the Band Dedicate themselves to their fans, then the favour will be returned.
If they behave themselves and act like responsible adults, they show personal credibility. The real bonus is when they avoid the temptation to espouse a lame liberal social cause or spout off for a Left wing political party or candidate; and please don't whine to the world about the evil that is embodied by the United States - otherwise, just shut up and act or sing. Maybe you would serve mankind better by leaving the USA forever and make your money elsewhere.
Bottom line: Just shut up and act. I don't need my entertainers and court jesters to instruct me on important matters that affect American society and the world political scene.
id have to say all of the above are pretty important but most of all, what is really really important is their dedication to fans and their attitudes. so id say its a tie between those 2
It was tough to decide between this and contributions to society. So for one minute here, Im gonna be selfish. And use dedication and not dedications... There is nothing more inspiring than a band who does it all for the people. Not the money, not the fame... just for the people.
When they take risks and push beyond the typical stereotypes and musical boundaries, it's disappointing when you expect so much more to a band only to find that their only in for the fame and image is all that they've got.
Maybe because the reason why they first even started in music was to make a contribution to society, attempting different ambitions for the band, thats NOT getting big & famous or being a "rockstar".
First, they have to have good music, which sadly isn't always a requirement if William Hun is any indication.
Secondly, image is a huge factor in this industry. If they don't have have that widespread appeal then their music likely will never make it out of the clubs. I will say, however, that this doesn't apply to everyone. Fans can make a huge difference.
It's the quality of the music first. Catchy pop songs don't lead to much longevity. The better the music, the more loyal the fans are. Plus, treat the fans well...and they'll follow a band beyond the grave.
Their music's longevity. The artists who are considered great are the ones whose legacy outlives their careers. Even though music by people like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Eric Clapton, The Doors, etc. isn't what's popular anymore, there are still people who listen to them and are heavily influenced by them.
The things which are usually most popular at their time are usually the ones who don't have the lasting impression on people because those artists were simply doing what was in at the time. Limp Bizkit was one of the most popular rock bands during their time, but now a lot of people think that they're a joke. It's the same with all of those one-hit wonders.
All of the above play an important role on the success of an artist.
Society nowadays emphasize too much on a person's image, you can be cute, nice, and dedicated but suck as an artist. If they play their cards right (having all of the above) their success can be beyond of their expectations.
Well image is a pretty broad term...but sometimes I think music is only 30% of what makes or breaks a band. Soooo much bad, poorly written, poorly sung, poorly made music out there but people still listen to it. I am not just talking about one type of music either.
John from Secondhand Serenade actually takes the time to get to know his fans by responding to messages and bulletins on myspace..he is a very nice man, and meets his fans at concerts.....love him
So many bands collapse because of bad egos, mentalities and over all crappy chemistry between members. Having a good work ethic and attitude can be a determining factor for where bands go.

Every artist has their muse, I'm sure this is completely different for every artist out there.
