Punk is the movement in the 70's that changed people's perspective on the government. It was the youth's rebellion against order and authority. And it changed music influencing other genres of music and bands.

it's definitely not a STYLE,it was a movement in the 70's and it's a way of being yourself and not giving a fuck of other people's shit, expressing, freedom,peace,anarchy....

Punk, for me, is a willingness to step outside the mainstream and do what feels right for you. Period. The music is just your soundtrack - YOUR soundtrack; the one you think represents the turd in the punchbowl that you are.

Nothing that's played now! A few punk bands are left but most of the recent ones sucks! After the 70's it got bad and SORT OF came back for a little bit in the 90's
Punk is a movement... an expression of not really caring. It's not a certain style that you can't see from a video they play on MTV.

Punk is a word that explains a lifestyle, Anarchy and Peace, Amazing music, but punk its self is a lifestyle were your not afraid to be the asshole, not worried about what someone is gonna say to you if you present yourself as someone different, Being a punk is a form of honor for people who understand the harsher side of life but want to change it instead of wine about it.

Punk is fast music, (almost) no solos and provocative lyrics. Of the three, sometimes the lyrics aren't that provocative.

In this the current dilution of what brought me through and ushered me into social concicioiusness: I still maintain punk is a music based movement that promoted unity, social awareness, and richetous anger. That is my definition but the reality is that punk is really a 70s revoultion, 80s ignition, 90s cashcow, and finally we are back to square one with bruises and lessons learned. Like Jughead's said: "Everyone is safe, punks not cool anymore"

Head banging music that didn't lull you like the flower power stuff. Instead it grabbed you by the throat and you either slam danced (what they call moshing now), pogoed or dropped by the wayside!!

Also it was a rebuke against the hypocrisy of some of the previous generations musicians who started out so cool and then got rich and became part of the big music corporate giant. I was there!

In 1981 I played bass in a punk rock band in Berkeley and there was a general concensus by all the punkers I knew back then that all the bands from the 60's protest years were hypocrites for joining huge record labels. The funny thing is that many of the punk bands we liked in the 80's also got onto major lables and made out quite well financially.

It's only selling out if you change what you are doing for the money. If you keep to your roots, there's nothing wrong with not having to work at resale shops to pay the bills in between shows.

yeah but the whole concept of punk is DIY not sell your music to an Industry... Fuck the Industry. Start Your own lable GG Allin Was Punk Rock, That ten bucks you spent on a Mudvane poster would have probly been better spent usualy seeing your bothers friends band.

While I agree that DIY is the best route (NOFX does a great song that highlights all the benefits of it), I see nothing wrong with being paid to do something you were going to do anyway. It's like someone who draws pictures getting paid to draw comics versus getting paid to design ads for crap they don't even like. I think that the major label record industry is dying slowly, with internet distribution and downloading accelerating their demise. Oh, and Mudvayne sucks, no ifs, and or buts about it. GG was punk, but I never got into his stuff.

Alternative music, mostly fast-paced, often politically motivated or mocking mainstream trends. bands limit instruments to guitars, bass and drums -- sometimes get funky with another instrument. No good punk bands make money. just kidding on the last part. but it seems that once a punk band makes money, it loses its soul (see green day http://www.sodahead.com/quest... )

Strangely enough, I'm listening to Rancid do an accoustic version of "Roots Radicals" as I type this. It works pretty well. I've always thought a good song works in any genre.
