The Clash is my favorite on this list but I prefer the Ramones. I don't think there really is a "greatest" punk band of all time. If the question is based on who had the most influence then Iggy and the Stooges, the New York Dolls and the Ramones all should be on this list.

...although my personal favorites aren't even on the list (Rancid, Social Distortion, the Misfits, NOFX and Bad Religion), I would say the Clash is the greatest, with the Sex PIstols as a close second, because they have had the greatest influence on everything that has come after them. Ramones should have been on there at the expense of GG Allin, I never was sure why anyone liked that guy.

It would be hard for me to pick just one. Punk is not really my favorite genre, but I've listened to and have plenty of it. My brothers are the ones that keep me going on this. I see a lot of other good ones in the other comments, so I'll add a few more of what I consider punk (??)

I almost clicked "The Clash" since I started listening to them early in my punk-education. They did great stuff, but not over-the-top/edgy enough. So I picked The Sex Pistols from this list. I also love Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion and Fear
