    The Clash

The Clash is my favorite on this list but I prefer the Ramones. I don't think there really is a "greatest" punk band of all time. If the question is based on who had the most influence then Iggy and the Stooges, the New York Dolls and the Ramones all should be on this list.

Exactly what im talking about with the Ramones debate the ramones music is Rock And Roll- Dispite what they influenced Thats like saying the New York Dolls Are punk because they inspired the ramones- or the rolling stones are punk because they inspired the new york dolls. there music is Rock and Roll there attitude is rock and roll. They are A Rock and Roll Band That is the reason why they are not on the list.

You don't know what your talking about, at all. The Dolls were the first band to be referred to as punk. They were cross dressers, get it "punk"? That's where the name came from jagoff. Just for the sake of argument I'll embrace your "punk is attitude" argument. I never heard Buddy Holly sing a song called beat on the brat. I never heard Chuck Berry sing a song called the KKK took my baby away. I never heard Elvis sing about heroin.

Wow, not a fan of punctuation, spelling or grammar are you? None of the things you just listed have anything to do with punk rock. Riots? Where? What fucking riot were you ever a part of? Fucking in front of the post office? Gimmie a fucking break. Not that it matters, but I've fucked on the side of St. Patricks Cathedral in New York fucking city. I don't use that as a claim to fame, my self esteem isn't derived from the places I've fucked. You talk a lot of shit bro but I don't see you putting your money where your mouth is. Name a show and I'll be there to take your bitch ass to school. Name a fucking show motherfucker. My name is Kevin Kemp and I live at 2170 East Jefferson, De-fucking-troit Michigan. Punk died in the 90's? Why didn't I get the memo? I mean, I go and see Rancid, NOFX, Bad Religion, the Damned, 7 Seconds, the Circle Jerks, the Misfits, Dropkick Murphy's, the Vandals, Social Distortion, the Suicide Machines and many, many others, and not one of them has the decency to tell me that punk is dead and that going to shows isn't punk rock, on account of punk's deadness. Bummer. Greg Graffin, Brett Gurewitz, Tim Armstrong, Matt Freeman, Dave Vanian and the others are going to be pissed when they find out they're posers. They must be, since punk died.

Strange. I've been to protests more than a few times. All I saw were stinky hippies. Not sure why anyone would think that that's the new punk, or that punk rock (note the rock in the title, denoting music) was no longer about the music. To quote an old school punk (who is still about as punk as they come)

Kick the kick drum, increase the weight of the sound
the dialogue of maximum decibels is enough to move the fucking ground
Well I amplify the rage of a class that's thought inferior
the message in the volume, the songs a carrier
    Unwritten rules
    Rules understood
    Unwritten rules
Booming out the speakers in the amps in the hood
I like to drink beer, play music and go to shows
it's not about paying your dues when your doing it out of love
I'm not a jaded junkie running dry (hell no)
I don't know anything else, be playing until I die
    Unwritten rules
    Rules understood

Booming out the speakers in the amps in the hood

It is now, always has been and always will be about the music. To borrow another quote, When I got the music, I got a place to go.

Dude, you can buy almost any of the bands on this list at Best Buy (GG Allin being the exception). Where you can buy a bands CD's is definitely not an indication of their punk rock-ness. I remember picking up Gorilla Buiscuits LP's at Harmony House (a local mainstream record store from before the internet killed that kind of store). I'm pretty sure I've seen Crass at Best Buy. While I think they suck, there is no questioning whether they are punk rock.

I've been to huge shows with 20,000 people there (alternative shows, from back when alternative was an actual alternative) and shows where at the end, the band stops playing and sits down on the edge of the stage, with the 20 people who came to see them and the singer asks "anybody got a smoke?" I like the smaller shows better, but some of the big ones have been pretty good, too. Like I said, whether or not a bands merchandise can be bought at Hot Topic or Best Buy really doesn't say a lot about whether or not they've gone mainstream. I still see Crass T-Shirts at Hot Topic. I've hung with the local bands, had more than a few of them play in my basement. It's good to see some of them get some recognition from people outside of Detroit, especially since when I've run into some of those dudes in the pit at other shows, they're still the same guys. My opinion is and always has been, if a band is good, why the hell should they have to work at the local 7-11? Just to satisfy some kids that they haven't sold out? If they're still playing the same music and getting paid to do it, fuck anyone who tries to call them sellouts.

I haven't seen too many bands do that that came from the punk scene. The pre-fab "punk" pop singers that major record labels try to sneak by us, maybe, but the bands that were playing small shows before they got to the bigs? No, not too many of them play other peoples songs, unless it's a cover or something.

I don't know if the Clash really changed a whole lot. They always had a pretty heavy reggae influence to their music (like a lot of early punk bands).. I don't think they went disco, I think that the reggae and ska influences came through more as time went on. Disco was always just one of the many offshoots of reggae music (one that sucked, but still...) Bands don't have to sell out for their sound to evolve.
