Group Question :: MUSIC.COM

What is Happening to the music today?

Sgt.Pepper September 19, 2009 05:14:32

Remember all the amazing bands that ruled over the 60-90's, well think of today's music now. Instead of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones... we have Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, Instead of The Who and Pink Floyd... we have Coldplay and Linkin Park.
Remember when music used to have different meanings and thoughts... well now there are only three subject spoken about in music: Falling in Love, Breaking your Heart, and Having Fun/ Being Yourself...

Do you see what I see?

this is one of the most poorly constructed theories i have ever seen, you must know nothing about music because The Beatles always sang about love, the counter culture movement of the 60's was all about being yourself. Also, some of todays bands are influenced by bands from the time period you are talking about, such as Bullet For My Valentine, they are influenced by bands such as Metallica and Slayer. I will say that most rap gives modern music a bad name, cause all they talk about is sex, drugs, and a lot of other s***.

Whow that is just so stupid. First of all, bands have been writing about those things for years. Including those bands you talked about. Altho Linkin Park and Fall Out Boy dont play exactly like The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, they are great bands. Music changes but it's still good and you should appreciate it more.

I'm sorry you don't like my opinion, but, like I said before, I didn't exactly word my thoughts like I wanted to, what I meant to say is that most bands today don't really show as much passion in their music like they used to.

I kind of agree with you, only some do really put every single thing they have into their music, but some only think about fame and money. it sucks.

I'm pretty sure with every new generation, the same question is asked: Why do kids today listen to this shit? The short answer is most people have always listened to pretty lame stuff, the Beatles and the Stones weren't the only popular bands in the sixties, and a lot of what was popular then was crap, even at the time. There's good stuff out there right now, and in twenty years, when people look back at the music of today, the bands that are remembered from now won't neccessarily be the bands that are at the top of the charts, and some of the chart topping bands that are really identified with now will only be remembered in a kitschy kind of way.

Yes, your right, and in the description I didn't really explain my thoughts the way I wanted to, what I meant was that passion is now shown in a lot of popular bands today like they used to, I'm not trying to insult all of the music today (I do like a lot of popular music) and I also don't think all of the music from the past is amazing. I didn't really write it the way I wanted to... Sorry. >_>

No worries. It's not just you, a lot of popular music is just not that good, but I think there was about the same garbage to great ratio in the past.

i understand what your trying to convey BUT

as much as i think that rock music has digressed, i dont think Linkin Park and especially coldplay are examples of such
if anything the following bands are the only hope we have
YES rock is dying, but Radiohead, Coldplay, Oasis, Keane, The Switches and Linkin Park ae whats keeping it on life support

    thank you :)

and i also think the music was so great because an entire generation was united against a cause (the vietnam war)
with out strife, passion left music a bit
without the common enemy of the war, the counter culture movement unraveled, aids became a consequence of such a wild uninhibited tri decade. money and materialism prevailed and the 90s became trashy money driven pop and boy bands,
it became absolute bubble gum v.s. underground
unfortunatly, materialism is proving to prevail
but some still fight it, which is why rock isnt totally dead yet

well... im young obviously and i do understand what you mean. I listen to jefferson airplane, the who, eric clapton. The type of music I enjoy now is alot of female artists like paramore, avril lavigne, lady gaga, but the one thing all these people have in common is that they can actually sing!!!! alot of these bands are getting signed and they cant sing for shit. lady gaga people common sing alot bands signed sing shit

Get a life. It is merely that our tastes are developing and it's ridiculous that some people remain so resistant to progress. The Beatles didn't do anything terribly amazing- they just did it first. They're good, but they aren't music gods. There's nothing wrong with today's music. Just your ears.

I'm sorry, I didn't word it properly, I didn't mean to say that All of the music today is horrible, what I am trying to say is that most popular music today really don't seem to be singing their music with any passion, unlike the sixties where most of the bands/ musicians showed their emotions in a creative way. I'm not talking about all modern music, I'm just talking about the generic popular music of today, obviously not all modern music is bad. But I'm glad you said this, because I really didn't clarify in the description...

I think it's hilarious that Linkin Park has been around since '98 but people are only now starting to pay attention to them and therefore they are "Pop crap" and "sell outs"

I've found a TON of great new rock, metal, and alternative bands. The radio is no longer the place to go to find new music, you gotta look online.

Linkin Park, IMHO, is actually rather good. But I do understand the sentiment of the poster - most new Rock is NOT popular anymore, when it used to be BIG just a few decades ago.

Look to Europe, is what I tell them. Europe has the good bands now. It's because the general populace still enjoys that kind of music, so the bands cater to them by playing over there.

They exist here in the US, too - but they're 'underground' - barely making a living playing small clubs. It's in other countries that aren't brainwashed by Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and the Jonas Brothers that you'll find decent music still staying popular-ish.

Yeah, I'm in the middle of Indiana and it's really hard to find shows with good music. They're just not popularized here and it's one of those things where you don't know about the shows unless you're a fan. It can be exasperating.

True stuff, the radio doesn't play enough of the good music in the world.
In my opinion, all the good music (or music I listen to), is the not-so-well-known stuff.
Radio doesn't do today's music justice, because they play the same music over and over, from the same like 15 artists. And don't hit the new bands nearly enough.

Exactly, that's why I like myspace and trig so much, I can look for music from new bands. Our local station plays two new songs every night at 6, but those songs rarely make it to the daily rotation.

Yes, I find most of my music through myspace.
And none of the stations I listen to play new music from like new artists.
    It's pretty disappointing.
So I usually just listen to my iPod.
