Green Day criticizes Wal-Mart: Should Wal-Mart sell uncensored CDs?

doodlebug May 21, 2009 22:01:47

Green Day's new album "21st Century Breakdown" debuted strongly and is on the top of the Billboard charts. None of the credit for that achievement goes to Wal-Mart however, which does not carry Green Day's CD. Wal-Mart only sells "clean" albums, albums that do not contain or have edited out any offensive language. Green Day refuses to censor "21st Century Breakdown" and now Walmart, the biggest seller of CDs, won't sell Green Day's CD.

21st Century Breakdown is the follow-up to "American Idiot", a multi-platinum album which featured hits such as "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends".
Wal-Mart should start selling music the way it was intended to be heard: uncensored.
Green Day should provide a clean version of their CD "21st Century Breakdown".
Both sides should stick with their positions. Green Day will sell albums without Wal-Mart's help.

Maybe they should sell both? Although I think Green Day can do without Walmart quite easily.

Green Day's album is awesome, they don't need Walmart's help. Besides, it's Walmarts loss, Green Day's doing fine without them.

It's the band's right to release uncensored albums and Wal-Mart should respect that, not ask that they release censored versions.

The people who run and own Wal-Mart are assholes but they have a right to censor what they sell. Green Day doesn't need Wal-Mart anyways.

music is way to express how u feel about things... and people. so censoring is like holding back the real emotion to a song. its like taking away the 1st amendment.

Green Day are an amazing band, and they don't need places like Wal-Mart ruining their CDs by providing censored versions. you wanna hear a censored version? there;s this site called youtube, babes. i am fairly sure they will have a censored version of the songs there. don't be screwing with a good cd.

They should definitely sell the uncensored version. That's the way music should be heard, it's more "straight from the heart" I guess you could say.

I hate Wal-Mart. I buy all my cds, dvds, etc., from Target. Wal-Mart could at least sell both censored and uncensored versions. Music should be heard the way it was intended to be heard, no artist should have to change.

Walmart is right and Green Day is right. Both should stick to their policies. Though GD is moronic if you ask me for not making thier music available to all ages. How much money are they losing because parents won't buy it for their kids because of language or content? My teens only are allowed edited versions.
  • boredom... Andrea July 12, 2009 21:16:53

well how old are your kids? most kids are already hearing that stuff from other sources....
  • Andrea boredom... July 13, 2009 06:11:59
    Andrea
I know that kids get that stuff from their friend's...but as I explain to my children, I am not those kid's mother...I am theirs. My girls are now 20 and 16. Obviously the 20 year old is old enough to do as she pleases. BUT...my 16 year old still trusts her mother's judgment. She won't listen to music where every other word is a swear. She calls it trash. I agree. You can say just as much without saying fuck or GD every other word. When she is older she also can do as she pleases. Until then, she does as I please.
  • boredom... Andrea July 13, 2009 15:43:12
    boredom-is-permanent
see, i'm 15 and my parents have long since given up trying to control what i listen to. i'm very passionate about my music, yes there is swearing in some or most of it but its just the type of music, i know better than to continue to spout it out. it's just music and emotion in its most raw form.
  • Andrea boredom... July 13, 2009 19:43:59
    Andrea
I understand. I had parents who controlled my music and literature when I was younger. That fact is, you are a child and should respect your parents by doing as they ask. You can't buy unedited PA cuts at Walmart anyway until you turn 17. It s8ucks, but your parents only want what is best for you.
