The temperature hit 114 degrees in July, but most folks passing by the "World's Tallest Thermometer" in this Mojave Desert pit stop never knew it. Once a shimmering beacon of light to Las Vegas-bound drivers heading up Interstate 15 with fat wallets and paper-thin dreams, Baker's 13-story thermometer marks California's last-stop oasis of bathrooms and burger joints before the Nevada state line.

On the right-hand side of the picture, the land is flat. Flat land can be very irksome to the eye. You need things to liven it up. In Europe that is often a Gothic cathedral.

There should be another answer like "Interesting" or "Useful".
It is certainly not as much an eyesore than certain other, rather useless or ugly structures, buildings and artworks.

I would hate to see a rectal thermometer the same size. What would be worse is seeing the rectum that it would be used in. I think that it would have to be Donald Trump though. Once he gets his fat head out of his ass then it would leave a gaping hole big enough.

How is it different from any other large monument structure? At least it has a purpose...

It's just a note of the small-town desert rat eccentricity. On the I-10 in Cabazon you'll find life-sized dinosaurs at their truck stop. It's fun to spot these things as you drive along the California freeways.

I do hope you realize that the image of the LA skyline, the smog and the freeway is phoney.

    Actually ...
Although I am now blind and can't see the visuals ..
I do remember quite well ..
the traffic jams .. the violence .. the filth and the horrible smog conditions ..
as well as the rudeness, the high costs of living, substandard housing and every other negative about Los Angeles
(was stationed there at a time in my Military Career).
Saw LA after the military too .. and it hadn't changed at all ..
the violence, the filth, the nastiness and rudeness .. along with high costs and other messes are still there ..

I'm sorry to hear of your inability to see the visuals.
Yes, there is a lot of traffic but that picture shows a scene that doesn't exist. I lived in the LA area for almost 40 years.
The smog has diminished remarkably. All of the other negative things you recall are still there (sadly) and some of it is only going to get worse.

Not only that it's the "rectal"thermometer of the United States.Yep it tells the average temperature of the undivided states with amazing accuracy. Is it any wonder it was erected right next door to the "Bun Boy"restaurant?

You want an eyesoar? Take a look at my moron neighbor's house. 6 boats in his yard that never move - he too, is an eyesoar. Matches his beat up boats! I would take that thermometer every day of the week over the broke down Davy Jones next door!

Funny thing is - it's just not the boats - all the crap that goes along with them. Covers on some of them that flap in the wind, junk that is supposed to be on the boats - but no reason to put them on the boats since the only time they see water is when it rains, etc. It just goes on and on. He's always outside hammering, drilling, sanding whatever and the boats and house looks like a prop for Honey Boo Boo!

Wait until you tour the Great Florida Trailer Parks! Then see the Amazing Exurban Asteroid Belt around every cored-out city! Strodes everywhere. Too fast to be streets but too slow to be roads!
