You Won't Need a Driver's License by 2040: Cool or Crazy?

Self-driving cars are on the way and some experts predict that "autonomous" cars will account for 75 percent of the traffic on the roads by 2040. It sounds funky to me, but it might be nice to have your car drive you home after a night out at the pub! What do you think?

CNN.COM reports:
The timeline for autonomous cars hitting the road en masse keeps getting closer. GM's Cadillac division expects to produce partially autonomous cars at a large scale by 2015, and the automaker also predicts it will have fully autonomous cars available by the end of the decade. Audi and BMW have also shown self-driving car concepts, with the former working with Stanford to pilot a modified TT up Pikes Peak.

Meanwhile, Google is ripping along at its own rapid pace with a fleet of fully autonomous Toyota Prius hybrids that have logged over 300,000 miles. And the company has pushed through legislation that legalizes self-driving cars in Nevada. California is close behind, and Google has also been busy lobbying joyriding lawmakers in Washington, D.C.

More likely,we won't need a driver's license by then is because some group will claim that it is racist to ask to see one.

I'll be too old to drive by then, maybe. I think it's a great idea and will probably cut down on accidents, I hope.

The biggest problem is that humans are becoming retarded because technology is taking over the brain. There is an app for everything on cell phones, no fail policies in school, government hires based on a certain number of mandatory minorities. We are all screwed. I'm glad to be the last generation with the ability to hunt and make a fire.

A slateboard was the handheld model, commonly used before you could buy those ream packs of notebook filler paper, at low-wages-always Wal-Mart.

I mostly agreed with your list, well except for that "There's an app for that," which I seriously don't think is necessarily so bad. And did you see the movie, Castaway? The character, played by Tom Hanks, could so much have used a grill fire-starter. Makes fire, so easy. He figured out how to make fire stranded on that island, but only after much grief and bloodied hands.

BTW, I think I like dry-erase boards, so much better. Less, nasty chalk dust all over. Better and more vivid colors.

I have scene slateboards as well. My point is is that the newest humans will struggle immensely if all electricity where to be out. Not many can grasp "survival" anymore.

But your tablet computer would still work, when the electricity is out, if it was powered by "free energy." Well the wifi might not work, but quite many apps, can keep local data, and do not need wifi to be present all the time. Things like the Bible, e-books, most games, calendar?, etc.

A tablet computer can also be charged in a car, by one of those nifty cigarette lighter USB chargers. They are tiny devices, and don't cost very much. Some cars leave the power on to the cigarette lighter, even when the car is completely off. And the power requirement is so small, there's no need to start up the car, to recharge a tablet. However, make sure the car isn't too hot baking in the sun. Tablets may not like that too well.

Somehow, I'm not too much looking forward to the day, when your computer dies or gets a virus, you are as crippled as during a power outage. One day they won't take cash, and children will ask, "What was snail mail?" Or, "Daddy, what is a mailman?"

Why does it have to be one or the other? Why not combine them all?

Self-drive, flying, "free energy" car. Now that's where it's at!

Even the Jetsons had 2 out of 3. Hard to imagine back then, that one day computers might actually be capable of driving-, make that flying, a car.

    jetsons flying car

Would 1 out of 3, work?

We may not need a drivers license by 2040, but we will still be paying a fee for something or other because no way will the govt give up that revenue.

The ability to drive is a PRIVILEGE and everyone needs to learn the proper way. The system allow everyone the opportunity to take a driver's education class & it should be mandatory especially for foreigners who speak NO ENGLISH, THEY NEED TO LEARN THE RULES OF THE ROAD & as well as new teen drivers..

They will have gps chips in every car and u will be tracked where ever your car goes.
You will have a chip implanted for I D purposes. Everyone will be fingerprinted and DNA on file. If you take a crap they will know about it. You think government is invasive now
Watch out. If u cheat on ur wife it will be known. Forget freedoms way too expensive.
If u try to drink a big gulp or have sex in ur car well just forget about it. If u get in the car
With alcohol on ur breath it won't start. There will be digital cameras everywhere.

Yes I did and it was very hard to do because I could not reach the brake and accelerator and see all at same time.
But I only had six tons of wheat on the truck and only had 3 miles to make it to the mill for storage....yes, it was a county road.
