The government with its union affiliation is not doing a very good job of it right now. Ben Franklin would not be happy!

And Sears is laying off thousands and closing some stores so how is the unemployment going down? How is the economy getting better? I am just not seeing it.

Hope to be submitting my own article on this tomorrow. Meanwhile, the quick simple answer is yes, if anyone can "save" the post office, it will be the free market.

Sorry, decided not to take the time. "They" will decide what to do about the USPO, not us. Be assured it will be another irrational decision and more debt.

It is one of the things that is provided by the Constitution. I'm not sure how you'd privatize it. I see people saying it should be turned over to UPS or FedEx but in reality the USPS delivers many of their parcels that is unprofitable for them to deliver. Where's the fleet to deliver mail, you certainly wouldn't do it with the big trucks. There are many things that could be done to return it to prosperity but they'll never be done. Either subsidize it or change the way we get mail and who gets mail.

Striker, I work there and I understand what is going on and why. I think that people who want it eliminated or completely privatized don't understand how much business depends on it or the structure of mail delivery.

I'm not defending it because it's my job, I can retire in July if necessary. I'm not even against having a privatized element but I think people who say UPS or FedEx can do it, don't have a clue what they're talking about.

My route is a city route with over 1200 stops on it. On a heavy day I've had as many as 4200 pieces of automated letters that is presorted in route delivery for us and up to 20 feet of mail that I've cased. Then I have small parcels, like medicine and electronics, and then the larger parcels.

Now, do you really think that all of that mail is unnecessary or that UPS or FedEx can just deliver that? Hardly.

One of the mail problems with privatizing is that private companies would take the profitable areas and leave the rest. No private company is going to take the unprofitable areas so many people in the country would be left without service. If that doesn't concern you, then no big deal.

It is in the Constitution for the federal government to deliver mail. I understand the frustration with it being insolvent right now but remember we are the only agency that hasn't had to be supported since the 70's. It could be changed fundamentally from within to cut out much of the waste. First, we can't be walking up to people's door and putting mail there. They should at a minimum have a curb side box or a neighborhood box in one location to pick it up when curbside isn't possible. We converted as much as we could in our town and it made a tremendous difference. We also are top heavy not with local management because we really don't have that many supervisors, but with district people that don't do anything constructive. Then we have the unions and as usual, they create unproductivity.

So, it needs fixing but it's naive to just say it can be privatized without any consequences.

You and I have covered this same ground before. The present consequences of losing $18 billion a year will be replaced with other consequences. Your own job may very well transition to private or even your own business. Whatever, mail service will be different or could become obsolete.

When a private business loses money year after year and cannot or does not correct the problem, it closes it's doors. Remember the door-to-door milkmen? Now there's a business service which disappeared even tho it may still be viable. A job I had for a while when just beginning. No more, but life goes on.

And where do you get your milk from now? You have to go to the store. I agree that I might have a privatized job. I would love for my husband and I to share a route when I retire. I agree that over time it could be partially privatized but it just can't happen overnight. We need to stop Saturday deliver which would save 4 billion instantly. They are trying to get Congressional approval for that but guess who's on the side of the unions?

You're usually on the side of the Constitution, what about that part?

today is a different day and another place, but we get our milk from whatever store; that's 1 mile or 20 miles or 35 miles. Nobody delivers, yet we would surely be someone's customer, were delivery available, LOL

A part of the PO problem IS of course congress, or shall we say government. Anyway, I'm going off now, I need to write an article on this for No-Ruler.net. That should be shared here on SH later. I realize it's of high importance to you, while to me it's simply a part of a very foolish system. There are hundreds of such, and there's really not time to deal with each and every bit.

    So later, friend

Only recently has it been subsidized. But, regardless we don't have any money and we need to get back to doing what we have to do, not what we can buy votes with.

This is no longer the 17th century where a need existed and the federal government provided it because the service was unavailable. .

Just shut the doors and regulate the others businesses more tightly that will be absorbing the influx of junk mail. Federal mail can be handled by fax and email, and "Official Documents" can be sent by "special courier"

The price of a stamp just went up and they close for every Holiday imaginable. That is government! I think online bill paying is better and perhaps reduce the Junk mail delivered btw since the government is so worried about Green energy. We could save a lot with less junk in every mailbox and in the WH. Forward all your junk to that address.

If the USPS charges a rate which actually suffices to avoid the need for subsidy and doesn't finish it's self-destruction, fine. Otherwise a different solution must be used. I would feel more secure about my "mail" if it were NOT delivered by "govern"ment.

Absolutely, because government has shown that it's totally incapable of performing even its legitimate functions with any degree of efficiency. As the size of government increases and it becomes more intrusive, the threats to our liberty grow by quantum leaps.
