They are part of the Mustelidae, known as Mustela erminea, i.e. ermine or short-tailed weasel.

It is also the same family as the mink, the marten, the ferret, the sable, etc., or even the badger and the wolverine. Furthermore, the otters (Lutrinae) are also a branch of this family.

The ferrets have been used since long for hunting rabbits and rats, or, more recently, as pets.

That depends; most of the mustelidae have a certain smell, excepting the marine otter. They need space and should live outside.

Actually, they emit this scent when they are afraid.

Stoats (considered as symbol of purity) and ferrets (for hunting rabbits) were kept as pets by rich families in medieval times and later (till the Romantic period), as old paintings showed:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
(da Vinci wanted an ermine, but the available model was probably a white ferret, because of its size)

The so-called exotic pets are rather "new pets" here in Europe (exotic or native wild animals); they are simply other than the usual "domestic animals in Europe":

I like ferrets. I don't think they are the same as weasels, and I don't think weasels would make good pets.

Yeah. It'd be cool to actually have one that's alive, instead of one that's been turned into a coat.

No, they are considered pests where I come from. I grew up raising chickens, and a weasel in the chicken coop was a bad thing!

IT IS: The stoat (Mustela erminea), also known as the ermine or short-tailed weasel, is a species of Mustelidae native to Eurasia and North America, distinguished from the least weasel by its larger size and longer tail with a prominent black tip. Its range has expanded since the late 19th century to include New Zealand, where it is held responsible for declines in native bird populations. It is classed by the IUCN as Least Concern, due to its wide circumpolar distribution, and because it does not face any significant threat to its survival.[1] It is listed among the 100 "world's worst invasive species".[2]
