Would You Trust a Virtual Changing Room?
Can a computer really tell you if the clothes you're thinking of buying will fit you properly? With Microsoft's Kinect full-body-motion scanner, you might get the chance to find out.
The device, created for gaming with Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, has been hacked in dozens of cool ways, but a Russian company has a unique take, currently implemented in a Moscow store called Top Shop. You just stand in front of the screen, which is equipped with the Kinect camera, and you'll see your image with the clothes you're interested in superimposed over you.
"Augmented realty allows the customer to select a garment off the rack without having to try it on physically," according to the creator of the Virtual Fitting Room, AR Door.
No more collecting numbered door hangers, filthy changing rooms or skeevy attendants! Well, that's the idea, anyway. In reality, as you'll see in the video below, it's not quite there yet.
But we're one step closer to the holodeck every day!

♥ Emily the "Cutie Banana P... 2011/05/16 22:34:02No+6The reason why I try on clothing that I'm considering purchasing, is to see how they fit and feel. I have to admit, that's pretty cool though.

You know... if they incorporated those full body scanners and then covered up the "too-much-detail" sections with some boring matte black virtual fabric, the computer could take the SKU of the garment and skin it on the model of your body made by the scanner.
Would need a physics engine, though to make the fabric hang right...
Why didn't someone think of this sooner!!
Question?
How much and where can I get it????
Besides, the camera adds ten pounds.
there's a lot more reasons to try the clothes on than what it "looks" like.
ya dumat oozhas
My mom would probably love that though. She absolutely hates trying on clothes.
Man, Kinect is getting a LOT of interesting applications. GPS for the blind, self driving cars, and Minority Report style interfaces...pretty good for a toy for a video game system.
