Would You Trust a Virtual Changing Room?

Can a computer really tell you if the clothes you're thinking of buying will fit you properly? With Microsoft's Kinect full-body-motion scanner, you might get the chance to find out.

The device, created for gaming with Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, has been hacked in dozens of cool ways, but a Russian company has a unique take, currently implemented in a Moscow store called Top Shop. You just stand in front of the screen, which is equipped with the Kinect camera, and you'll see your image with the clothes you're interested in superimposed over you.

"Augmented realty allows the customer to select a garment off the rack without having to try it on physically," according to the creator of the Virtual Fitting Room, AR Door.

No more collecting numbered door hangers, filthy changing rooms or skeevy attendants! Well, that's the idea, anyway. In reality, as you'll see in the video below, it's not quite there yet.

But we're one step closer to the holodeck every day!

Concept pastes over a virtual "skin", no account of stretch or drape :-P

I love the concept, but the execution is, naturally a long way from what we want to see. Time will tell.

You know... if they incorporated those full body scanners and then covered up the "too-much-detail" sections with some boring matte black virtual fabric, the computer could take the SKU of the garment and skin it on the model of your body made by the scanner.

Would need a physics engine, though to make the fabric hang right...

As cool as that technology is, its alot of money waisted on taking the place of simply PHYSICALLY putting the clothes on yourself...to know how they ACTUALLY fit.....

No. That thing did not flatter their bodies at all, it didn`t fit it to them properly. Just put the outfit on.
Besides, the camera adds ten pounds.

Will the screen tell you that you get a wedgie every time you try to tie your shoes? Will it let you know that the zipper always catches precious and tender skin when you try to zip up?

there's a lot more reasons to try the clothes on than what it "looks" like.

I like to see how the clothes look on me...without the clothes I'm currently wearing underneath.

My mom would probably love that though. She absolutely hates trying on clothes.

What a great ideal.I know everytime I go to buy something I wonder who had this on before me and were they clean ,with this yo never have to worry about it again.I wonder if it could save a scan and give you a code the at xmass some could put your code in and see if what they were going to get you looked good on you.Shhhhhh I think I might want to send that in and see if thay can use it and I get paid for it ????

It doesn't replace changing rooms, but it would give you an excellent preliminary examination of your purchasing choices to help guide a customer. And for a big store, it would be a relatively tiny investment. This is a great idea. Just stop thinking of it as a replacement for all dressing rooms, and start thinking of it like another tool to use.

Man, Kinect is getting a LOT of interesting applications. GPS for the blind, self driving cars, and Minority Report style interfaces...pretty good for a toy for a video game system.

It might be able to show you how you look in something, but it'll never be able to show you how you *feel* in it. And how it feels on you is just as important, if not *more* important, than how it looks.
