Would You Take Online Classes?

Online education definitely has its benefits. It can save students time and money in terms of cheaper tuition and less traveling to college campuses. Like many other things in life, online education can also have its drawbacks, as recently covered by The New York Times (Read more: "The Trouble With Online Education.") Online courses can be more good than bad or vice versa depending who you are.

If you are someone that needs more hands-on learning, being in a traditional classroom or lecture hall may be more beneficial to you. Having a teacher explain concepts to you front row center is sometimes a lot better than reading words on a computer screen, followed by a couple chapters in a textbook. Even instructional videos, as visually explanatory as they are, can't necessarily replace a professor that can sit down and walk you through everything.

As we mentioned before though, everybody is different. Some students are self-starters and can read chapter to chapter, cover to cover, and go through instructional videos understanding everything there is to know in a course. At the end of the day, no matter how a student does in an online course, there is a part of the college experience--the relationship with professors and classmates, enjoying the college campus, etc.--that they will be missing out on.

What about you SodaHeads? Would you take online classes?

I surely couldn't (and wouldn't) be able to attend a traditional school due to other responsibilities like work and raising a family. Besides, it's harder to keep my mouth shut as a grown-up when I hear attempts at liberal indoctrination.

I'm too easily distracted. Old-fashioned learning is the best method for my visual learning style. I would never take a math or science class online. A writing class or a history class- that might be interesting.

Yes, on-line courses are convenient but they do take some getting used to. The trick is usually to set up a convenient schedule for doing what you need to do. Of course lots of people have no problem just winging it either. Then there are those that probably won't like it and would be better off with a traditional course.

Online everything is the way everyone is going. I like online school because I can manage my time better. I have less stress with getting homework done. Online school keeps me focused because I do not have to get ready to leave the house, and pack up a lunch or anything. I just get on the internet. Gasoline is free on the internet. lol

Not so. I have had really tough classes and had to seriously buckle down to learn. Then, one learns to communicate with other students and the instructor. That interaction definitely helps everyone.

Please explain to me how much easier it is? Because I still have to read the book and then write up papers, submit those papers and then they are graded just like traditional school. When I went to a "traditional" school I went to class, sat in a room was bored to death by a Professor who basically read some stuff out of a book, talked a whole lot about nothing and then told us to read and prepare a paper. I've just cut out the middle-man and the whole having to listen to a boring professor. Traditional school I could have just bought a paper instead of doing my own, with my online class I have to submit it through their system to ensure that I haven't plagiarized anything, so what is "EASY". You don't get to just buy your degree from an institution like you may think but hey everyone has to be prejudiced about something. We do live in an Us v.s. Them or Mine is better than Yours society.

Its a really great way to get your education and still have a life. Also, not everyone has the luxury of living near a campus, or having a car, or access to public transportation. I got my BA online, which was great!!! No gas cost, no childcare to worry about, learn at your own pace as in no class to get to "on time". The books and degree are the same with far less hassle.

I have taken several of them, but I was taking them for free, for no college credit, just for my own interest in learning about the subjects. They were offerred by The Teaching Company and my local library has them available to borrow just like any other regular book or e-book. Then, I recently found out that there are other courses which are available for free from Harvard and M.I.T. and CalTech and I am trying to find out about those so I can take some of them. I also am currently taking an excellent course about the U.S. Constitution that is taught by Hillsdale College, which I would recommend to everybody because I see evidence every day that most U.S. citizens (and many elected politicians-including Obama) don't know as much about the Constitution that they should (especially the citizens who actually vote in elections).

My answer is more like "maybe," but you didn't allow for that.

The quality of online course work is dependent on the organizational skills of the instructor. Some have good skills. Some have skills that totally suck. I wouldn't want to take an online course with an instructor who sucks.
