Would You Spend $60,000 to Fight for Custody of Your Pet?

They say a dog is a man's best friend, which explains why one man has already spent $60,000 to get his beloved pooch back from his ex-girlfriend. Manhattan art gallery employee Craig Dershowitz, 34, has spent $60,000 of his savings to win custody of his puggle, Knuckles, TODAY.com reports.

puggles knuckles

Knuckles currently resides in California with Dershowitz’s ex, Sarah Brega. Dershowitz and Brega dated for four years and broke up in March 2011, but shared custody of "Knux" until November, when Dershowitz claimed in court papers that she "kidnapped" the dog, "Today" reports. Dershowitz says he purchased the dog when the couple was together two years ago, and that Brega was supposed to return the dog once he found a new place to live after their split, but she refused to do so.

Now that he's out of dough, Dershowitz wants you to help fund his legal fight to get his dog back (see his website here). But Brega says Knuckles is doing just fine where he is. "Knuckles lives a happy and healthy life in California with me, where he has ample room to play, and lives in close proximity to a beach for off-leash dog-park outings,” Brega said in court documents.

She also told "Today" in a statement: "(Knuckles has) been with me his whole life. It is unfortunate that (Craig) is using the courts and a fraudulent fundraiser to continue to harass me. He is taking advantage of unsuspecting donors. Craig thrives on media attention and he is seeking it out in order to further his career while exacting revenge."

    Amazing.

I'm struggling mightily to raise $42,000 to bring to public awareness a painless cancer treatment that was suppressed and in danger of being lost using the same website as Dershowitz. Meanwhile, this guy blows $60,000 to recover his dog. One man, one dog, sixty-thousand dollars.

Of course, he has raised more money so far than I have.

    Human beings sure are funny.

Yes, your sure right ! I sure would pay , also we dont really chose our dogs they choose us! A dog dont care how big of a yard you have. They just want to love you , and will love the ones who shows them love back! This is clearly a man who is a jerk and yes harassment all the way .it is just away to stay in control to try to control the sitution. You see he could not control the break up, so he is trying to still control the situation by trying to take what is dear to her. Because she is dear to him! He is hurting and wants to make her hurt! No ,matter who was wrong or who was right. Who does the dog want to be with ..screw how big a yard is ,or your finances ! The dog not care. ! Give him to the mom.

I'd do almost anything for my pets. The only reason I didn't take my ex to court when she stole my previous dog was because I didn't want to separate him from her dog, since they always lived together.

Hate to tell you this but he'd run off from you for someone handing him a stake. Animals don't claim family. They claim territory but that can be changed. They ain't human. They don't think like humans and any human that think that don't know their animal "family member" as they claim it. Sorry to burst your bubble

Wrong...dogs have personalities, just like people. Plus, it depends on his perceived position within the family. Dog packs are quite similar to a family. Just like in human families, dogs have a rank structure. If the dog thinks he's the head of the household, he'll leave whenever he wants to...UNTIL HE GETS THE STEAK. Then, he'll come back. However, if he understands he's not the head of the household, he's not going anywhere without you. Hate to put my bubble back together...

Once again your wrong wolves travels in packs not dogs. A mother dog is the only one that looks after pups and that's it. They don't have feeling. Stick a gun to a dogs head it wont beg for its life it will lick the gun. Dogs are only loyal to those that feeds it and pets it. They are nothing like humans. All animals are not like humans. The closest would be wolves but they are also just an animal. Any animal can be broken into slavery which is what humans do to these loyal pets of theirs. Spend a day in the wild and you will see that all animals have no humanity.

A dog is a domesticated wolf...they have the exactly same DNA. Wolves and dogs can mate, actualy
  • Jacob Maurice... 2012/05/17 02:27:49

Hence me saying slaves. They may have the same dna but not the brains. Plus I never said wolves had emotions. You take a pet you remove your thoughts of being human then you'll see the truth. But humans like you claim them as family and then they lose sight of what animals really are. Why we are the ones in charge of the earth why we are ontop of the food chain
  • Maurice... Jacob 2012/05/17 06:26:37
    Maurice Tillman
We're at the top of the food chain because we discovered a better way to adapt...Not long ago, we were somewhere in the middle of the food chain. We didn't have super speed, super swimming abilities, or the ability to resist the elements like furry animals. Furthermore, we had lost the ability to climb trees. Intelligence was the only way to survive. Luckily, we discovered how to control fire...This provided protection and allowed our population to grow. The bigger the population, the more opportunities for evolution. Humans learned and passed down their discoveries to later generations. This is why we are more intelligent. Dogs have intelligence. They understand emotions, can form complex thoughts, and can learn many of the same things we are taught in grade school. They don't need to learn these things, therefore we don't teach them. We also have a higher population, superior technology, and thumbs....Thumbs and technology are why man rules the world.
  • Jacob Maurice... 2012/05/17 15:59:38
    Jacob
Brains is why we rule and is there proof of such brain activity in dogs. I don't believe so. I can climb a tree and swim and run. No not as fast as some animals but still. Humans even as cave men were atop of the food chain. We don't need our electronics I mean look at the amish people.
