Would You Spend $60,000 to Fight for Custody of Your Pet?

They say a dog is a man's best friend, which explains why one man has already spent $60,000 to get his beloved pooch back from his ex-girlfriend. Manhattan art gallery employee Craig Dershowitz, 34, has spent $60,000 of his savings to win custody of his puggle, Knuckles, TODAY.com reports.

puggles knuckles

Knuckles currently resides in California with Dershowitz’s ex, Sarah Brega. Dershowitz and Brega dated for four years and broke up in March 2011, but shared custody of "Knux" until November, when Dershowitz claimed in court papers that she "kidnapped" the dog, "Today" reports. Dershowitz says he purchased the dog when the couple was together two years ago, and that Brega was supposed to return the dog once he found a new place to live after their split, but she refused to do so.

Now that he's out of dough, Dershowitz wants you to help fund his legal fight to get his dog back (see his website here). But Brega says Knuckles is doing just fine where he is. "Knuckles lives a happy and healthy life in California with me, where he has ample room to play, and lives in close proximity to a beach for off-leash dog-park outings,” Brega said in court documents.

She also told "Today" in a statement: "(Knuckles has) been with me his whole life. It is unfortunate that (Craig) is using the courts and a fraudulent fundraiser to continue to harass me. He is taking advantage of unsuspecting donors. Craig thrives on media attention and he is seeking it out in order to further his career while exacting revenge."

    Amazing.

I'm struggling mightily to raise $42,000 to bring to public awareness a painless cancer treatment that was suppressed and in danger of being lost using the same website as Dershowitz. Meanwhile, this guy blows $60,000 to recover his dog. One man, one dog, sixty-thousand dollars.

Of course, he has raised more money so far than I have.

    Human beings sure are funny.

What a ridiculous power struggle between two ridiculous people! $60K would buy an awful lot of plane fare to visit the dog, or enough booze to forget the dog or a comfortable life for a bunch of dogs. What a yutz! Besides, a puggle isn't even a real dog. It's the result of some unscrupulous breeder's attempt to pander to stupid people's perceived needs.

Uh, oh! Here come the hate responses from designer dog owners. Why not go to a shelter and save some poor abandoned "pet" instead of shelling out big bucks for a trophy? abandoned dog

I love my kitty, but I use most of my extra money for charitable organizations, so I think it would be wrong to spend so much on something so self-focused. Now, if my pet was taken by an abusive ex-, I might have to re-think it.

Yes only if it was my dog honey. I love that dog. But i did not know someone could fight over a dog. Or even try to get custody as if it was child. Thats intresting. Why did the girl kidnap the dog. I guess to get back at her ex boyfriend. Well if i ever have a boyfriend and we live together im making sure he does not steal my dog.

No. Just go buy yourself another puppy and your old friend will fade to a nice memory.

The case just mentioned has nothing to do witht the dog but is just a power trip between ex-lovers

Some people are very emotionally attached to their pets. They love their pets just like their own children and they are irreplaceable.
Why dont you just throw your kids away and adopt some kids from Africa? Your old children will fade to a nice memory.
Love is not just limited to human beings, many people give that same love to their pets.

That's a lot of money, and though the love of the animal is there, it's probably going to a decent home so it couldn't be that bad of a situation. Though... if he was fighting for custody, couldn't they have just arranged visitation rights or something? Spread the love around to both parties haha

I understand the love of a pet, but spending that much money--especially I you don't have it and have to resort to fund raising--is ridiculous. He got the 15 minutes of fame, now get a new dog.

Does sound more reasonable to me. You could rescue lots of pooches for $60,000.
    They are soooo precious.

I'd pay whatever I had to get custody of my kid. (I don't have a kid, but if I did, I'd fight tooth and nail to have custody). I love my pets I really do. But I wouldn't pay that much to gain custody of one of them, UNLESS I knew that the person who had custody was going to abuse the animal. But if that was the case, I don't think they'd get custody in the first place. Otherwise, nope. I would let the person keep my pet. I'd be very sad, but eventually get over it.

My experience around divorce and custody issues is that it's best for the kid if the parents don't fight in front of them or even over custody.
A man should be able to automatically expect once a week or so to have an outing with a kid.
I've even heard of guys buying a house in the same block to be easily accessible to their children.
If you ever do have a child you will be blessed regardless.

I had always said that I'd I have to pay over $1,000 for any given procedure it was time for him to go. That is until my 5 year old lab got a bad ear infection due to his allergies. $2,500 later he was better an we found a better food that did not upset his allergies that costs $50 per bag. Dogs have a way of tugging at your heart strings. $60,000 is a ton of money. If I knew he would be at a great home, I would not likely spend anywhere near that. If he were still young enough to justify it and healthy except for something that there was a high chance of fixing, I may be willing to spend quote a bit. Let's hope that that does not happen and that my buddie stays well for a long time.

The dog is cute, but the man is not exhibiting any wisdom for his own future. The dog will have no more than 15 years of life and the man will need to replace the funds he foolishly threw away on this bit of extreme spending sometime in the future. And he can get another dog who will fill his heart just like this one had. Sure he will miss this one, but the guy needs to move on.
