Would You Spend $550 on a Barbie Doll?

The average Barbie doll costs less than $20 on Amazon.com, which is why we can't believe that some people are willing to pay $550 for a plastic blonde! Granted, it's for a good cause -- sort of.

All proceeds from Mattel's line of "designer" Barbie dolls will go to the Council of Fashion Designers of America's scholarship programs to inspire aspiring fashion designers around the world, Yahoo! Shine reports.

Five designers -- Tracy Reese, Alice + Olivia, Loomstate, Rogan and Alexis Bittar -- created miniature Barbie outfits based on real items from their Fall 2011 collections.

The dolls are up for auction through Tuesday, Oct. 11, on CharityBuzz.com with starting bids of $550 -- but their actual estimated value is said to be $3,000 apiece. In other words, if you spend $550, you're getting a bargain.

Hey, the holidays are coming up, and these dolls could make great stocking stuffers for the little girl in your life -- or the big one. And a "designer" Barbie doll might even wind up to be a lucrative investment, even while it provides Ramen noodles for poor, starving fashion students.

I wouldn't spend that on a sex doll, well I might if I could get it into the house without the neighbours seeing it.

Any girls shocked by that I'll raise you a pink rabbit....

People are saying "No" and "Only if I was 5" etc... these are collectable dolls. Not for children, but for adults. I for one collect barbies and they are a good investment. If they are rare enough and you hang onto them long enough, they become worth thousands. So to all the idiots out there saying no, you have no idea what it's like to be a collector and just see these as toys - which they aren't.

Fashion design students are in the same line as every one else. Take out a loan or qualify for a grant. Seems to me that some designers today shouldn't be in the job that they are. They produce garbage and yet these idiots oogle over it. The material costs about $40, labor $15, and the rest of the cost $500 goes to an individual that whipped it up in a moments notice. You find these clothes on the Salvation Army racks in a year. Surprise, no one wants it even the poor.

That money should be going to breast cancer or juvenile diabetes research. We have enough crazy designers (people who makes gagas "clothes").

There is no way i'm paying 550 dollars for a plastic doll, are you kidding? It's a plastic doll, i mean, first of all, it's a doll, there is no second because the first says it all. It's a freaking doll for God's sake, a doll. What kind of stupid idiot would pay 550$ for a plastic thing that it's not going to last, your daughter or sister would like it when she's youg but 2 or 3 years later or maybe 1 year, she will hate it. I bought a barbie once when i was young, and hated it the next week, didn't wanted to play with it anymore. How did Barbie get so famous ?

well, i'll go out on a limb here and say yes-with a qualifier. IF i had money to spare (fat chance) and IF the doll was one that really blew me away, yes i'd pay that much or more if it was going to a REAL charity. when i actually had disposable income, i went through a barbie collecting phase, buying through the catalog, you could make payments, and i did pay $275 for a doll over a couple of months. i got a lot of $300-$500 dollar dolls on ebay for less than half their asking price. liked barbie as a kid and still do. always said i wanted to BE barbie-she had everything and had done everything, claimed her as a 'cousin', rofl-since her official 'real' name is barbara millicent roberts, and my maiden name was roberts.

I will never buy a Barbie for any child of mine. All it does is promote a screwed up self image for girls. Start making Barbie look like a real person and not an anorexic celebrity and I might change my tune.

I am having a hard time finding a reason to pay $20 for a new Barbie doll when my parents still have quite a few of my old ones. They don't even look as good of quality as they used to be. Cheaper made and more expensive...that's the world we live in today.
