    As usual, Fef, there should be an "Other" option. It depends. I have to say that my answer on this has changed. I used to believe that a human being, even a stranger, is infinitely of more worth than any animal, however loyal or loved a pet may be. It was a no-brainer that I would save the human. But, now I am less sure. Many human beings are more dangerous than my pet. My pet can't vote me into slavery. My pet wouldn't rob me or try to kill me. So, now I look at the question from the perspective of is it better to save a potentially dangerous animal (human) of greater inherent worth or a non-threatening animal of lesser inherent worth? I must say that I'm unsure now. The sad reality is that many humans do not deserve to be saved, especially because many end up needing to be saved due to their own foolish decisions whereas animals are more helpless and I expect less of their intelligence. I would consider many factors before I decided to act, including where I was, if I knew whether or not the person had accidentally fallen in the water and how the person looked.

    FAMILY would always come first. My pets, dogs cats etc are all part of my family. So yes they would come first over a stranger.

    Well honestly, no. I don't know if you're only counting those animals which we find cute and cuddly (dog, cat, horse, gorilla etc.) or every single animal that has lived on the planet (wasps, spiders, crabs, rats etc.) with the exception of humans.

    As much as I've loved every pet I've had and no matter how much pain it would cause me to resist saving them, I would choose to save a human's life first. If someone were drowning and needed me to save them, I would let my pet go (most likely my pet would be able to swim to safety anyway). I could handle grieving for my pet, but leaving someone to drown would haunt me forever and cause grief to a lot of other people. Even if I don't know them, it's someone's child, sibling, parent...maybe all of the above. People would be grieving for their death and I would know that I could have stopped that from happening. And even if they were a horrible person, it's not for me to decide if they're worth it or not. Maybe a stranger saving their life would have an impact on them and change them.

    "Today I save him, and tomorrow he saves me!" what a perfect quote. I'm sorry a stranger has never came to my rescue my dog has saved me several times. It's like he's still trying to pay me back for rescuing him but he doesn't realize it's me who owes him for protecting my family and I.

    They are my family, I'd save them before my friends too. Of course if I could I'd try to save the stranger as well but if not, my cats.

    A stranger every time, animals can swim and know it, but not all humans can. If i put an animals life before that of a person, i couldn't live with myself if that person drowned.

    I was afraid this was going to be the question. i have to save the stranger, a human. But, if my dear pet didn't make it i'd be distraught. I sure would hope the stranger did something good with his life.

    Imo, the value of life is psychological, not physical. The lives of the members of my clan (chosen family) are of more importance to me than the lives of others. My pets are part of my clan, and as such, I would save them before I would a stranger. The exception being if that stranger happened to be a child. This doesn't mean that I would not attempt to save a stranger (I would, in fact I have no doubt I'd risk my life to, if I knew my clan was out of harms way), it just means that they would not be top priority...and I would not expect anyone else to save my life over a member of their clan either.

    I love animals I do, I love my pets dearly I do, but if it were one or the other, a human's life would come first. Hopefully, I could save both.
