Would You Rather Watch Movies at Home or Go to the Theater?

Netflix might be splitting into two different services, but it's still the king of home entertainment. Whether you're down with DVDs or online streaming, they've got home viewing in high demand.

But what about movie theaters? How are they competing with the age of easy access?

In 2010, the National Association of Theater Owners recorded about $10.58 billion in box office sales, down $20 million from 2009's estimate, and 1.3 billion admissions -- also down from last year's numbers, but not by much.

Netflix, on the other hand, reported just over $2 billion in revenue at the end of 2010.

In terms of revenue, theaters are clearly outdoing Netflix. But that doesn't mean the box office is preferred.

For starters, at $8 a month ($16 now if you want DVDs and streaming), you could watch movies from home on Netflix all day every day.

In theaters, that would get you into a single movie -- if you're lucky.

There are also more options for home viewing than there are for theater viewing, and not just in terms of movie selection. You can watch movies for free on television, go to Blockbuster for a quick fix, or just buy the movie on Amazon.

But you probably don't have a 300" widescreen projector in your house.

I like being able to skip back if I didn't catch the dialog. I like not having to listen to people talking during the movie. I like being able to pause the movie to go to the bathroom or go grab a beer. The only thing going for the theaters is the size of the screen and the sound, but I can come close to that by just sitting closer to my big screen TV and turning up my stereo a bit.

I can't figure out why anyone rushes to a Theatre to see a movie It will come to an online rental service in a very short time and a hell of a lot cheaper and you don't have to dress.

I would rather watch them in the theater but can only AFFORD to watch them at home. Make theaters cheaper and you might see more people going again.

It would cost me about $15 dollars for admission and maybe $20 dollar for me and my wife to have popcorn and a couple of drinks. I can do without that crap.

I like both the home experience and the theater experience, but the tiebreaker is the fact that food costs far less at home...

go for a walk. get a job
    get a hobby
as apposed to paying 85 bucks for two people to get in, get popcorn and a soda
only to have some tard kick the back of your chair all the way through, while another person yell "oh I wouldn't do that. I would kick his...."
Then the cell phones and the babies, then the coughing.... "dear god what is that smell"
Fun should not be at such a heavy cost.
Go to a bar and just drink sodas. It's legal and you talk to people who are there to "just get out of the house"

At home, we rent our movies or buy them! We may or may not want to watch them over and have a great sound system. So we love the watching at home, it is GREAT on the big screen!

At home i do not have to deal with inconsiderate idiots who talk through the entire show. I also don't have to listen to little kids whine because they're bored.

And.... the popcorn and drinks are WAY cheaper at home (and my floor isn't stickey).

Movie theaters are far too expensive. And besides, at home if you need to answer the call of nature, all you have to do is pause the movie, that's something you can't do at the theater.

Home is way better. I can pause and pick up where I left off. I can have much better snacks at a 10th of the cost. I can sit in my favorite chair and be comfortable. Theaters suck.

Typically, I like being home so I'd rather watch movies at home. But, the movie experience is heightened at the Theater. So, for convenience sake, home. For ultimate movie experience: the Theater.

We have a 180" screen, a video projector, an HTPC and tons of movies at home. We can pause the movie if there's a need for a toilet break and not miss a second of the movie and we can enjoy whatever treats, foods and drinks we like whilst watching the movie. And no need to worry about sitting next to or near someone who chatters during the movie constantly.

It's not so much about the movie itself but getting to go out with friends and have a good time. You can do that at home too and save money to boot, but it feels nice to splurge on something arguably useless but big and flashy.

I hate it when folks get up and walk in front of you, or talk during the movie.
