Would you rather send your kid to a private, public school, or have them homeschooled?

Both my Daughter and Granddaughter went to private schools, from Kindergarten through Highschool. Would not have it any other way. I believe our public schools are poorly run and not doing a good job of educating our youth.

Whether people like it or not public schools (chartered schools are the next best) are the best chance kids have for a taste of what reality is. Just because a public school doesn't meet ones expected level of academic challenges doesn't mean that they aren't good. America got where it was, built on the shoulders of people who survived the public school system. Furthermore, private school and homeschooling doesn't guarantee a good education. All public school teachers have to be licensed and considered 'highly qualified' by their state board of education. Private schools don't always have licensed teachers (meaning they don't actually know what they're doing) and depending on the school they don't even have to pass a background check (code for a pedophile could be teaching your children). Homeschool kids are just strange...I would never do that to my child - one of my best friends was homeschooled and she admits it puts her to a big disadvantage because homeschool kids never get exposed to anything but what they're used to.
Public schools work the way capitalism works...if our kids are going to be living in a capitalist society, they better get used to this: what you put into it, is what you get out of it.

If I have the money, my kids will probably attend a private school, otherwise, I will probably homeschool them.

It depends on the parents' capabilities, the abilities of the public school (some aren't worth the name) and the private school in question and the ability of the parents' to pay.

Public schools do not teach an unbiased curriculum. Also they teach too much propaganda.

Although I think homeschool is great and the kids are very smart as well as secure emotionally.... after a year of homeschool with my son I put him in private school ! I think if we would have started out homeschooling we would have stuck with it! but he went to elementary school for 5 yrs and then we tried homeschool for a year..... and then private school

Montessori is the best type of private school that I know. They teach independence and everyone learns at their own pace, which is much faster than most public schools can handle.

My niece was homeschooled through the 10th grade. The kids at the public school she spent the last two years attending couldn't keep up with her. She is now a med student with a active social life.

I do send them to private school..as we are last in education in the US...well but it is an extremely affordable one 577 a month for two kids! Well to me it is affordable but we make sacrifices in other areas of our lives. But some states have wonderful public schools..but if you do not like the way a school is or how the children act...then you have to make some tough choices.

Went to all kinds, best 4 yrs was Catholic HS, and that includes college. Public is good if you live in really good district.
Homeschool only as last resort. Better way for kids to develop their social as well as academic skills.

In today's society it is the only answer, combined with a whole lot of social activities.

My son goes to a private school and we're very happy with his progress, but I have to say public or private, you have to check out the school, the teachers and the curriculum before deciding on a school, and also do homework/read with your kids.

I would want my children to go to a Religous school from Kindergarten to 5th or 6th grade to teach them morals and etiquette. Then I would want them in a public school where they are exposed to the real world and have a foundation in their life for how to behave with a reality of what to expect in the real world!

Depends. Where I live we have an excellent school district and schools. So here I would say public, but I realize it is not the same everywhere. When My parents came to visit and went to my son's elementary school for the first time, they could not believe it was not a private school. It is a lot nicer than even the schools I went to as a kid. I went to private school kind-3rd grades. I was put into public school by my parents, b/c it didn't offer alot of the extracurricular sports that you get in typical public schools. So that is also something to think about.

have you ever heard of a private school turning out students who couldn't read or write? i've known many people that grad from public and could do neither, or at least very little. i think most public schools are very liberal and don't teach facts, they teach opinions. and it's disgusting that some of the teachers make 40-55K per year, and still the students don't learn. did you know that the federal government alots approximately $10,000 per year per student (from your taxes) and they still fail. private school parents pay $2000-(?) $4000 and get 10 times the education. private school teachers are there for a reason. i've heard of public school teachers letting kids watch videos the whole time, or simly sit and read the books w/o any discussion. i'm sure across the board it's not the same, but the majority are poor. i believe in (?) holland, the money for public schools is allotted to the parents. the parents then make the choice where to send their children. if a particlar public school is very poor, it is usually closed down b/c no one will send their child there, meaning they receive no income. we should implement that here. basically, public schools are a monopoly. a little competition would do them good.

I think private and/or homeschool may provide some better book learning but what about social learning? I think most of the private schools, where I live anyway, are for more afluent whites. My kids are pretty good at accepting people by their personality and don't pass judgement based on race or economics. That said, we live in a community that is 60% black and wrought with unemployment but we're not faced with serious gang influence or violence in the schools.

Most folks don't have the education for homeschooling, but for those who do, Kudos as long as they provide socialization. IN AZ all classes must be taught speaking two languages simultaneously and quite frankly my son's suffered in the 1 year they did attend public school. Some states have wonderful school systems and some areas of town. That leaves some of society remaining to keep innercity kids with the least chance of social mobility. Family Values I say pay teachers by their achievment in teaching the kids and the environments in which they work. Additionally, Private schools don't require the Credentials that Public Schools DO!

Kids should be able to go to school, have a good time and learn something new without having religion shoved down their throat. Public schools would be "doomed" if we were to put prayer and God into the school. Do you realize how many people would complain about this? I applaud Madelyn Marie O'Hare for leading the way in taking this out of the school systems back in the '60s. Also, what if there are children at the school that are not Christian, which I'm sure there would be a good chance of this. Are we going to force kids of the Jewish, Buddhist or Muslim faith to listen to prayer about Jesus? That's ridiculous and it's a terrible idea.

Thats why the public school system is in such sad shape.Prayer in school doesnt force a certain religion. Every religion has a God. Just pray to your God.When I was in grade school in the 50's we started every morning with a prayer and the pledge of allegiance. And if you're not christian you dont have to participate. This is a christian country.I always thought majority ruled.

I agree, prayer is good for the kids. People thank their so smat that we dont want to hurt someones feelings. Ever since this concept started the schools have gone down hill. Prayer and some good morals is good for the kids.

You're just so clever. Your wit astounds me. And, you don't even know anything about me, so how would you know that I'm "a great example of failure." LOL, what a waste you are. And, for being a religious Christian, you always seem to be so full of hate. That's sad.
