I've picked up hitchhikers I knew. I would never pick up someone who is a stranger. The hitchhiker Rutger Hauer

Depends how they looked, gender, etc. I wouldn't want to put myself in danger. :3

Under most circumstances no, but I did once. I saw a car pulled over in the winter and a women and her child standing outside trying to flag someone down. The car was smoking (that's why the kid was out), so I gave her and her kid a ride into town and let her off at a diner. I felt safe doing so. Normally I wouldn't feel safe.

C'mon. There are people who are helpful who are Dems & Republicans and people who aren't helpful that are Dems & Republicans. You can't paint a group with one broad brush.

It would really have to be a desperate situation such as a lone female with kids stranded in winter in eastern Washington. More likely I would dial 911 and call the state patrol.

It depends on the situation, how the person looks (scraggly vs intimidating, etc), and my generosity, risk, and impatience meters.

Because I would want someone to do the same for me if I'm ever in a tough situation that requires travelling.
All the stories I've heard from people I know are positive experiences. My mother once drove by a native american hitchiker. She said he look like he hadn't bathed for a long time, and just looked like a creepy sort of person. Then it started to rain. So she turned the car around and went back to get him. Turns out he was from her town and was quite a nice person.
One of my teachers picked up a hitchhiker as well, even with his wife and kids in the car. Technically the guy was having a medical issue at the time, I don't recall what... but he was outside in the middle of winter, but they took care of him and drove him to the hospital I believe.

One experience does not mean that you should immediately give up on humanity and assume all hitchhikers are bad.
If I were stranded and didn't have a cell phone, I would want someone to pick me up. I'd rather do that than walk to the nearest farmhouse because they usually have dogs.

I'm with you. I would never do it unless it was someone I knew and trusted. There are more bad apples out there than good ones. I could never put myself at risk like that. I have to take care of myself, and therefore I need to be extremely careful.

I would and I do. Particularly tramps and people with those signs who are delivering cars across the country. I am reluctant to give women a lift.

When I see a young female hitching I want to give her a ride, but then I'd probably end up lecturing her on the dangers of hitching and then she'd kill me and take my car. tah dah!
