An 18-year-old high school senior recently won the lotto -- and now he'll be getting paid $1,000 a week for the rest of his life. Would you quit your job or keep working if you got a $1,000 paycheck every week?

Your not going to live large on $52K a year. Keep working. New England has a new lottery that pays the winner $1,000 a day for life. That another deal. 1000 a day for life

in the next few years $1000 will be a pittance, over here in the UK, just 28 years ago I was earning £50 a week & that was a lot for someone of my age, now I can't fill up my Smart car with diesel for £50, now I earn £340 a week basic & I have huge debts as my bills cost more than I earn, when I was earning £50 a week, I would pay £3 to £4 to fill up my car (a Range Rover V8 back then) pay my rent, gas, electricity, water rates, rates, phone bill, car tax, insurance & MoT & still go out most weekends for a drink, now I don't drink & my bills range from 200% to 1200% higher but the wages haven't matched, that will be the same with that $1000 a week in a few years' time

My freedom and time is more valuable to me than money. I'd rather live a modest lifestyle and not have to work.

That is actually a decent amount of money, I think. One could live a comfortable life with that salary. There would be no trips to Europe every month but it is enough to pay the bills, have a modest house/cars and put in the savings account. I would do a lot of volunteer work and maybe work again eventually.

I would keep doing all the things I do now in retirement. I certainly would like to travel more without regard to cost. But, too, I would like to be able to be more generous with the charities I like to support.

It's a little more complicated than yes or no.

$1,000 a week is a great start. I'd definitely take more time off, get more training, be pickier about the jobs I take, etc. I'd invest a lot more and hopefully be able to retire early.

But, I still plan to be about 30 years from now and I don't think 1,000 a week is going to cut it then.

I would, if I could find a job. Lost mine 3 years ago, almost to the day BO was inaugurated. Not one job available in my field since. None.

I'm comfortably retired now and find myself volunteering regularly with Meals on Wheels, etc, to stay busy.

Edit:$1000 weekly is not really that much. In many areas that would just about cover the basics.

I would not have to wait for retirement to do the things I enjoy. I might even start my own business in my area of enjoyment. If you enjoy what you are doing, it is not "work".
I wish this young man the best life has to offer. I don't mean what money can buy...what it can't.

We're not here to just sit around, when you have "idle" time, your money will be gone in a flash. I would at least work part-time, and least I would be somewhat occupied then.

I want to keep working because you never know how fast money can be spent. I also want to keep working as a reality check that this is real life, and that people have to work. I want to work even if I do win the lottery also because I would get bored out of my mind sitting around doing nothing. It'll keep me active too.

Oh yes ! That is only 52K a year. Add that to my regular salary and it will mean that I won't have to worry about things getting tight. It also would mean I could pay off my house early and retire a couple years earlier. But on its own, it just ain't enough.

$1000 a week would definetly mean i wouldnt have to work for a very long time. to everyone out there saying thats not much. in exactly 1 month and 15 days i will be moving to europe to go to college there i will be collecting 1000 euros A MONTH in which to live off of, thats aproximatly 1500/1600 US DOLLARS a month, and i know quite a few people who are living quite comfortably with such little money, this money paying rent, bills and school costs... as it is my parants make about 2000/3000 dollars a month each, and we live on a much higher standard then most people... so yes, $1000 a week would be more then enough money to live comfortably. just one week out of that month would cover any bills... the rest would be money to invest, save, and use to find activities to occupy my time.
