Not any more. I used to hitchhike and usually had my big old English sheepdog with me. That guaranteed safety and usually I was picked up by folks fascinated by my well groomed dog. It was harder to get a ride;but they were always amiable experiences. But nowadays I would not pick up anyone.

yeah me also. a couple of times both women were just getting out of jail and had no way back.....amazing coincidences of how many hitchikers recently got out of jail with no way back!

Yes

I have, because I have been a "hitchhiker" - for example my friends and I were drenched at the end of a hike and a guy on the road let us ride in the back of his pickup truck; things like that. It really depends on who I'm picking up.

I meant to answer no. But I did pickup up a hiker and regretted it. Dude had me onedge and I couldn't drop him off quick enough. Sadly, I will not do that again. Took a chance trying to be nice. Better safe then sorry.

Of course, it depends on where I am.

Example: I lived in Northern California for a while, and it was pretty common for people to hitchhike up the road for a couple of miles or so. It was safe and part of community behavior.

I would and have if:

1. the person seems in distress, injured
2. appears stranded, car trouble, sick
3. bad weather, more so if miles from nowhere

It's never been safe to pick up a hitchhiker particuliarly if you are unarmed, driving alone, and like me a woman. I wouldn't pick anyone up unless I knew them and knew them well enough to know that I'm safe with them (pretty much that means only close friends and family are the only people I'd pick up in this day and age for a ride).

Yes, I did, repeatedly, especially where public transport is not nearby and where there is no problem to stop and charge people. It happened that I was asked for a lift when walking to my parked car. Some time ago, for instance, I brought some youngsters to the city, late in the evening, and they were fun to discuss with.

I did once on a long drive back from college. This guy hitched from the East; I was living in Kansas at that time. After I picked him up suddenly became very nervous, stayed close to the vehicle in front of me. The guy turned out to be a nice guy, but I won't pick up anyone anymore.

I hitch-hiked all over Europe when I was younger, so I almost always pick up hitch-hikers. I'll pick up women alone, men alone, or combinations, but I won't take them when a woman is standing there with her thumb out and a guy comes running out from behind something when you stop. It's not that I'm afraid, it's just I think it's underhanded. In Europe guys and girls who don't know each other will hitch-hike together. It makes it easier for him to get a ride and offers some protection for her. At least that's the way it was 45 years ago.

If I recognized the person.

The last stranger(s) I gave a ride to were a young married couple with a baby in a front-carrier on a sub-zero Xmas morning in the mid-70's. They were visiting relatives and didn't realize the train schedule wasn't the same on a holiday so were walking about 5 miles. I decided they didn't look like closet ax-murderers.

In the 1970's when I was a struggling single mom with 3 kids i did pick up a young hitch hiker.He told me all his woes as I took him to the alternative school he attended.Guess what he helped himself to my grocery money while we talked and I drove.That was the last time..It was not money to spare it was for my children's food.Wow was I upset!!
