Would You Eat Horse Meat?

Tired of beef and turkey burgers? You may have another option. Horses could soon be butchered in the U.S. for human consumption, now that Congress has lifted a 5-year-old ban on funding horse meat inspections, The Associated Press reports. Congress lifted the ban in a spending bill President Obama signed into law Nov. 18, the AP reported. So there may soon be a slaughterhouse near you -- that is, if you can stomach eating horse meat.

"If plants open up in Oklahoma or Nebraska, you'll see controversy, litigation, legislative action and basically a very inhospitable environment to operate," Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive of The Humane Society of the United States, told the AP.

Opponents claim horse meat inspections could cost taxpayers $3 million to $5 million a year; as many as 200,000 horses a year could be slaughtered for human consumption, the AP reports. Most of the meat would be shipped to countries in Europe and Asia, including France and Japan.

U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., is lobbying colleagues to permanently ban horse slaughter. But Sue Wallis, a Wyoming state lawmaker who is vice president of the nonprofit, pro-slaughter group United Horsemen, told the AP that the federal ban devastated "an entire sector of animal agriculture for purely sentimental and romantic notions." Which side are you on?

I personally do not agree with horses being slaughtered but i have researched and the people in Kazakhstan, for example, eat horse meat as a it is part of their culture. This is a part of this blog I've found:

"If we take a look at the Kazakhstan nation, you will see that they have nomadic roots. As they were not settled somewhere, they were not able to grow cereals or some other animals and their only chance at survival was represented by consuming horse meat. Moreover, in their culture, it is a sign of appreciation and respect to eat horse meet."

My yes vote is somewhat misleading. If I had to eat it to survive, well of course I'm going to chow down. My issue with this is, I don't care if it's a horse, dog, cat, parrot, pig or cow. If it's my animal (two key words there), and I want or need to eat it, screw the government, I'm going to eat the darn thing. As long as I'm not cruel to the animal, aside from the whole killing and eating it of course, then it should be NOBODY's #!&$$#@ business what I do with my animals. Other than public safety issues, this is something that government in a supposed free society should have no part in. Folks consume all manner of critters throughout the world, most of which "civilized" westerners would find repulsive.

Who told you that it's not tender, it's just as tender as beef and taste just as good or better and like buffalo is better for you. They eat it everywhrere in the world except the U.S. and as a horse gets older the meat actually get more tender.

You don't know what you're talking about, it is just as tender a any other form of cattle and as a horse gets older it gets even more tender, not like beef that get tougher with age.

If I were starving, but never by choice. I've heard it's very good, and have heard that dog meat is tasty too... It's an evil necessity. If your horse is sick, old or severely injured, you can't just take it to your vets and leave it in the freezer. They must be buried. They weigh ~800# or more. It's a shame to see nice, rideable adoptable horses going for $5. or no-bid at auctions where the kill buyer snaps them up but again, they're not like dogs and cats and are expensive to feed and care for. In MI, people are just turning them loose. There is a market for horse meat, I would rather see them killed humanely in the .S. instead of being trucked to Canada or Mexico (where they're stabbed to death) Enviroweenies have shut down all the packing plants in MI and our poor pigs and lambs are shipped to PA. I think that's wrong, what a miserable ride.

We eat just about every other kind of animal, I would try it...I may not like it, but I would try it. The fact that so many people have horses, go horseback riding, etc. and have close bonds with horses is why they are so against it. If they can eat chicken, turkey, cows, fish, any other animal, they really have no right to say no to horses going for food. It's just as bad as the others.

I wouldn't have said "NO WAY" - a simple "No" would have done - the main problem for me is that horses are wormed with a number of harsh chemicals, including Ivermectin. Ivermectin is also used for cows, but unlike cows, horses are owned as pets, by many people who grossly over-worm their horses (with the kindest of intentions) to the point where the horses even develop immunities to the wormers. They are full of drugs. I have eaten horsemeat (being a horse person, someone thought it would be funny to serve it to me) and it was really very nice - but horse people are nuts when it comes to their horses.

People have become nuts about all animals they call pets, they want to treat pets better then their own children or husbands/wives.

I've eaten alligator (it tastes like 'gator). I can understand why people answer "no" on this. We form closer relationships with horses than with cattle. But if you think about it....well maybe I should change my answer. ;-)
