Would you eat a GMO product?

You!

People have mixed opinions about genetic engineering in general; I'd say that if done properly it's more than safe. There are a lot of advantages to it if it's done in an intelligent fashion.

Not until their are more advance in genetic engineering. There are too many unknowns right now.

I'd love to have some GMO produce that was healthier for us and provided more nutrients that were otherwise hard to come by. They haven't gone about things in the right way though, unfortunately.

How many foods can you name that aren't the product of some modification? Are you sure?

Until it's proven I would not touch any GMO if I could help it as 80% of US grain type food is probibly GMO by now anyway as they hide things from the public eye

Granted, when they're done wrong, GMO foods can be dangerous, but so can any other food. As long as basic safety testing remains in place, I don't really see the problem.

I have...Most of our food is GMO'd unless it's marked organic or otherwise...I mean, it's good that the crops cann feed more people, but the toxins and chemicals that occur in GMOs are frightening (addictive drugs in wheat, estrogens in soy, etc.)
  • kir vitamin... 2012/07/17 11:27:34

Actually gluten is naturally occurring and can be considered addictive to those who have a reaction to it and soy naturally contains estrogen...

i know that gluten is naturally occuring(believe me I have gluten sensitivity) and that soy contains estrogens, but the wheat we eat nowadays has been so genetically engineered that it has morphene-like drugs in it that are actually addictive.

I believe that was through our own selection; I suppose you can call that genetic engineering, but most people don't consider hybridization and selective breeding to be genetic engineering.

Aren't most of the manufactured foods available in stores sporting the latest GMO trends?

Probably. It's a trend that's spreading too fast in my opinion; we don't need to modify every food we have through genetic engineering. However I do feel that genetic engineering can have some major benefits to civilization as a whole both in food production and medicine; it can also have some really neat future applications which I will write about at another time such as self repairing buildings, etc.

Sure, as you say, if done properly.
I do have a bit of concern though about corporations and how they plan to control world crop seeds and production. Global food production and distribution should not have any "too big to fail" corporations or monopolies.

We raise a lot of our own heritage foods and buy local meats. The difference is night and day on the fresh, locally grown and raaised foods. Am now canning Cherokee Purple tomatoes for this winter.
  • kir merlins... 2012/07/16 21:53:31

Oh I definitely agree that local production no matter what is the best way to go. I think tomatoes still need to be canned rather than jarred, but I do want to note that canning has some negative health consequences in itself. What about freezing?

We dry them mostly with a dehydrator. But fresh canned (in a jar) after the skin is removed is pretty healthy. No preservatives added,

I've either done that or grown my own since the 70's. I've been a stickler for organics, too, and it's paid off for me when pesticides and such have caused news. Funny a it seems, my family was very much into that even in the 50's.

Well ignoring the fact that we've been manipulating our food for about 10,000 years making it nothing like what exists in nature, and ignoring the fact that genetic transfer occurs natuarlly all the time, as my article points out, I will agree that eating locally produced food produced using natural farming techniques is a good idea.
