In 1965 I swore this Oath.. “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
In 1979 I swore this Oath “I, (state your name), having been appointed a (rank) in the United States (branch of service), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the office upon which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
And in 2008 I swore this Oath
Those Oaths will expire when I do, and if it means expiring doing my Duty, so be it..
When I signed on the bottom line getting into the military I pretty much stated that I would. With that being said I still would. As long as I don't have to die for the current president. I wouldn't take a bullet for him.
fighting is not really my strong point. if it was a case of sacrificing my life to guarantee the safety of everyone else in the country, then yes i would do it. but i would be doing it for the people, not the country.
I did 2 combat tours in Vietnam and was ready to die then, but that long long ago. I'm not too sure anymore. Anyway I'm way too old to be called back. :D
It's like General George Patton once said. "Wars aren't won by giving your life for your country. Wars are won by making that other poor dumb bastard die for "his!" Those are true words for sure
When I swore my oath....
It was basicly writing a blank check to the US government that was redeemable for up to and including my life.
Trust me, I would really rather not.....But it's part of the bargain. It kinda offsets all the free clothes, medical care, and the assault weapon they let me play with.
There you go Doc. I swore that very same oath when I got in and even though I've been retired since 98 I still hold that oath to be current. My oath will expire when I do.
If in my final act I made the world, my country, my hometown, or society in general better of because of it? absolutely..... in fact, it may be my sole purpose for being born, so I would never deny fate that.... my contribution to a better world..... peace.

I love my country and I would defend and die for it.
