Withdrawal symptoms are no longer just for people trying to give up drugs or booze. According to a new study, unplugging from the Internet can be just as difficult.

"Our addiction is so severe that people described going 24 hours without Internet akin to quitting an alcohol or cigarette habit," said a report from the British company Intersperience. "About 40% of those surveyed reported feeling lonely without the Internet, and 53% felt upset at being deprived."

Another study, conducted by the University of Maryland supported these findings. 1,000 students from 10 countries were asked to abstain from all forms of media for one day. After 24 hours they reported back on their successes, failures, and feelings about the experience of unplugging.

Many students spoke about their relationship to media as a form of addiction and admitted to experiencing cravings and withdrawal-type symptoms while abstaining. One said, “Media is my drug; without it I was lost.”

Others reported feeling bored, lonely, anxious, and depressed. “The lack of media had me in a terrible mood all day. I was anxious and annoyed at pretty much everything. Trivial things that usually didn’t bother me that much drove me insane,” said an American student.

What about you? Would you be depressed without the Internet?

IF THE COMPUTER IS USED FOR "WORK", AND THEN YOU NO LONGER HAVE ACCESS TO ONE. I SUPPOSE IT WOULD BE LIKE "LOSING YOUR JOB". THEREFORE YOU SHOULD EXPECT A BIT OF DEPRESSION. WOULD N'T YOU THINK?

On the contrary, I'd probably be happier not knowing how many people are driven by ignorance, hate and ideology.

No, because we'd be able to connect better with things more in tune with our nature.

At the same time, yes, because I enjoy having an endless source of information available at my fingertips. Subjects that are oppressed, or generally controversial can be better explained when you hop online instead of relying upon another limited being. :)

I would, but not because I need to be online 24/7. I don't go on the internet all the time, I just like knowing that I have access to it whenever I want. I've had the internet taken away from me a few times and it made me feel anxious, as if I was missing something.

Then perhaps people will start going back to that little thing we like to call human interaction and not be on a computer all day..

I AM depressed without the Internet. I don't have it at home thanks to ATT wanting a huge downpayment to get it after I fought them off with a fraud case for nearly a year. They cleared the fraud with the prodding of the Public Service Commission but don't want to make restitution and want a $100 down payment for service (U-verse plus the first month of a one year contract). So I am still doing my Internet at the library. It is awful. And without being able to get on it nowadays, I feel ignorant, out of the loop and uninformed.

Yes!!!!!!! I know it's sad, but the internet is such an important part of my daily life that if I couldn't use it I would be a very sad panda and definitely go through withdrawals. I use it to communicate with family, friends, school people, work, random people (through SodaHead for example), etc; I also use it to read, to play games, to do schoolwork in general, to keep myself update on the news, to find jobs, store location and hours, apartments, furniture, movies, and pretty much anything else, etc, etc.

It's just so efficient and the world is almost literally at your finger tips. I can't imagine my life without it.

Because their are other things I could do while sitting on my arse, like reading one of my 100+ books on my book shelf, playing a couple games, doing something outside (when it's not 98f with 80%+ humidity), etc.

Nope! It would be a welcome break... less work. As long it was only temporary because as everybody knows... the internet has become the centerpoint for industrial and social interactions.

This is because with the internet, people are more depressed then ever! So without the internet we could learn to do more healthy and fun things outside which would cause less depression.
