Would Tyra Banks Be Considered 'Too Heavy' to Be a Model Today?

Tyra Banks has transformed her modeling success into an impressive career spanning fashion and TV. But if she were getting her start today, looking like she did as a teenager, she says she'd be considered too fat to get hired. Find out what her mom had to say about it at 1:10 in the video below!

In an open letter congratulating Vogue for its recent decision to ban "too skinny" models, Tyra writes in The Daily Beast: "Many of you have graciously said that you want to have the same type of career that I’ve had....But the truth is that if I was just starting to model at age 17 in 2012, I could not have had the career that I did. I would’ve been considered too heavy. In my time, the average model’s size was a four or six. Today you are expected to be a size zero."

tyra banks

"In my early 20s I was a size four," she writes. "But then I started to get curvy. My agency gave my mom a list of designers that didn’t want to book me in their fashion shows anymore. In order to continue working, I would’ve had to fight Mother Nature and get used to depriving myself of nutrition.

"As my mom wiped the tears from my face, she said, 'Tyra, you know what we’re going to do about this? We’re going to go eat pizza.' We sat in a tiny pizzeria in Milan and strategized about how to turn my curves into a curveball. In a way, it was my decision not to starve myself that turned me into a supermodel, and later on, a businesswoman." Do you think young Tyra would be considered "too heavy" to be a model today?

Heck, she is older.............. A bit beefy in that newer beach picture, but I wouldn't say it looks bad............... She looks like she hasn't been exercising as much, that is for sure. A bit heavy in the thighs. She is 39, not 25!

Part of getting older......... If they go by her teenage picture, I think she would still do fine today if she was just starting out. imho

I haven't seen her lately, but it is common for the model types to go through a binge/fatter phase. Who could blame some of them............

Screw what the modeling industry thinks. They want models that have every bone sticking out. But size zero doesn't work for everyone.

    Honestly, does this:

    thin models

    thin models

    Look better than this:

    plus sized models

    curvy models

    Um, no.

Although I respect your opinion that you pefer rubenesque body shapes, I think you have chosen the wrong set of pictures to compare. The high fashion models you chose have been photographed walking on the runway with no special lighting to flatter the body. The plus size models, instead, have been photographed for editorials (I recognise the Crystal Renn one from Vogue). They have probably used photoshop (plus size women with no cellulite or baggy imperfections seems suspicious to me), good light, a celebrated photographer, the models had more time to pose for the picture and they have perfect makeup.
This is what the plus size model you chose (the one with raven hair, Crystal Renn) looks like on the runway:

    Not as appealing, right?
And this is what the skinny model in a bikini in the second picture (her name is Magdalena Frackowiak) looks like in a photoshoot for an editorial with (probably) photoshop, nice light and perfect makeup:

And compare her stomach on the runway to the one for Victoria's Secret ads:

Also, I believe she was photoshopped in your picture too to look skinnier. In other runway or street style pictures I've seen she doesn't look that thin.
So I hope you don't blame me for thinking your comparison was unfair and maybe a little biased.

I understand what you mean. I admit I may have used the wrong pictures to compare. I was just trying to say that the modeling industry is obsessed with really thin girls. Like the unhealthy type of thin. I just don't think models have to have every bone sticking out of their bodies to be considered pretty or have to be Photoshopped to look so thin. It sends the wrong message to pre-teen and teen girls, like myself. The size zero thing doesn't look good on everyone. But anyway, thanks for the reply. I totally get what you are saying. And I apologize if I came off unfair or biased. :/

As a teen girl who follows the fashion and modeling industry as if it was the elections ;-) I must say that I used to feel the same way too. But as I learned more about them and dug in deeper, I started to feel better. If it's of any help, I know who the models whom you picked are. The first one is... Imogen Morris Clarke I think? I cannot see her face well. The other one is Magdalena Frackowiak, the one on the upper right corner is Vlada Roslyakova and the one below I cannot see her face well. Looks like Lily Donaldson though. And they are all size 2's and actually not as skinny as they look there :-) Don't worry, the veryveryvery skinny ones are probably photoshopped to degrade the fashion industry and make women feel insecure so they are against the industry too (yeah, there are people who love to do that). So no need to freak out! Size 0's of unhealthily low BMI's have been banned from many runways recentley anyways. :-) You shouldn't feel insecure for a bunch of lies that are easy to believe (I believed them once too!).

I wont ever understand the appeal of anorexia, as a look.

Are there guys that like girls who look like they have other mental illnesses, as well? Or what about a cold, is it sexy to have a red runny nose? lol

that would be "accept".....& there is not really anything as a 'strange' mental illness, particularly anorexia.

These people are very intelligent & generally extreme overachievers who feel compelled to be perfect in everything they do. School, work, team and individual sports, relationships, etc. When they begin to realize that perfection will never be attainable, they fool themselves into thinking that by controlling their body image with way screwed up diets, exercising, laxatives, starving themselves & vomiting, they will be able to attain at least one area of "perfection". It is still a most difficult disease to control, much less cure; & relapses occur throughout their adulthood. The disease is often compared to alcoholism and other addictive conditions.

I know a great deal about this because my older sister was one of the first "documented" cases of the disease back in the mid-70's & she has been living an up and down life for nearly 40 years. So strange is not a word I would use, more like soul-sucking.

Sorry I'm not jumping down you're throat, just letting people know the personal toll that American Culture can have on those of us who are unable to ignore the many, not-so-subtle messages about how we "should" be.

That woman is top model Magdalena Frackowiak with bad light, on the runway, in a pose that makes her look skinnier and is probably photoshopped (trust me, I've seen other runway pictures of her and she doesn't look half as thin).
This is her with good light and a better pose and perfect makeup:

I'm sorry, but the pictures scream photoshop!
The first one is Nataliya Gotsiy and she looks like this:
    Nataliya Gotsiy
The second one I believe may be one of the models of the Céline show in Paris Fashion Week 2001. I'm not sure exactly who she is, but she reminds me of Crystal renn when she was anorexic (but she was never as bony as that!). But I've seen the collections and none of them looked so unhealthy (her head seems too disproportionate to her body to be true).
The last one is the most used one. I don't know who she is, but I know that she's photoshopped A LOT:
    Photoshop
The minimum nowadays is a size 2, not a 0 anymore.

I am so inraged about people saying yes! Tyra Banks is my rolemodel!!!! Everything she lives for is to be able to show every person that they are beautiful inside and out!!! She has said her self that she knows she is no longer the same size she was when she was a model! She is trying to change the "regularities" or "requirations" to be a model! She believes that everyone is beautiful! And in her words " No one is "fat" they are just beautifully full figured"! Tyra does not approve of models that are "too skinny"! On Tyra's tv show " America's Next Top Model" Tyra has had to eliminate model and send them home for being " too skinny"! Again in Tyra's words " I want to show healthy confident models, not unhealthy " too skinny" models! If you are considered "too skinny" then you aren't considered healthy, and I want my models to portay healthy bodies, no matter what size they are!" I in no way believe Tyra Banks is too fat to model again! She isn't even big! If you think Tyra's fat then try looking at some normal oversized people, and try just try to tell me she is too fat! You can't! So don't! Thank you!^_^

It's not us saying that Tyra is fat--at least, not most of us. Frankly, she isn't. However, she's larger than most models these days (who are often too skinny, in my opinion) and would have trouble getting hired.

I realize she is cinsidered larger than most models now a days, but also she is now considered too old to model! That is why her goal is to try and expand that the different sized models! That's why she has had many themed "America's Next Top Model" shows! She has had the 5'7" and shorter season, and the "full fiflgured model season! She wants to expande the belief of what size a model should be!^_^
