Assume that religion simply never existed. Would the world be better if instead of making up a mythology to answer questions about reality humans had instead sat down and from day one scientifically figured thing's out? If instead of saying that lightning was the god Thor doing battle with Ice Giants, they had said "We don't know what it is, but it looks cool, is dangerous, and one day we will know what it is."
Imagine this world without the divisor of religion, that there was one less way to think of people as different and one less reason for wars.
Would the world be a better place, and if so why? Also what do you think might be different about the world?

If everyone in the world adopted the so-called 'scientific' view of things, then certainly there would be less strife, but the same would be true if everyone adopted the view of a particular religion. I fear what you're really putting forward then is not one bit different from that of the religious fundamentalists: That everyone should think like 'us'.
