Would the world be a better place without religion?

Assume that religion simply never existed. Would the world be better if instead of making up a mythology to answer questions about reality humans had instead sat down and from day one scientifically figured thing's out? If instead of saying that lightning was the god Thor doing battle with Ice Giants, they had said "We don't know what it is, but it looks cool, is dangerous, and one day we will know what it is."

Imagine this world without the divisor of religion, that there was one less way to think of people as different and one less reason for wars.

Would the world be a better place, and if so why? Also what do you think might be different about the world?

You forgot the option where we'd be about the same because people are going to be dicks or saints regardless.

Maybe. Maybe not. As much as I don't care for religions, I wouldn't say to get rid of all of them for no reason. Most religions are perfectly fine. Its the extremists that make things bad for everyone.

The contradiction I see in thinking the world would be better without religion is that the desire to eliminate 'the divisor of religion' so that there will be 'one less way to think of people as different' is arrived at through thinking of (religious) people as different, and creating a divisor therebetween.

If everyone in the world adopted the so-called 'scientific' view of things, then certainly there would be less strife, but the same would be true if everyone adopted the view of a particular religion. I fear what you're really putting forward then is not one bit different from that of the religious fundamentalists: That everyone should think like 'us'.

I've always felt that religion has kept people scared straight. Not all people obviously but I think without it people may just kill people without the guilt or scared feeling of what may happen to their sole. It's hard to put what I'm thinking into words here.

Yes, religion has proven itself to be mostly harmful over the course of history.

I think it would. But people have always, and will continue to try to force their beliefs on another. Humanity just sucks, I don't think it's entirely religion's fault though. We created it, after all.

I checked NO. I definitely disagree with that question. I feel the world is in the state it is in because people have turned away from religion. Religion provides a moral compass in times of stress and doubt.

Incorrect, you checked yes. Prehapse instead of a moral compass you need more acute vision.
