Would it be cheaper to travel without luggage and buy new stuff when you arrive?

If you are flying then yes. It has gotten so expensive to go anywhere on a plane that I am glad I cant fly anymore!

sometimes yes. Depends where you are going and for how long. If you travel a lot, you learn how to pack for 5 days in a carry-on, and that's including one suit.

I find a duffel bag should suffice unless it is a business trip

Given the charges now being inflicted on you ..
even for carry-ons on some airlines ..
Might be far cheaper to just ship to your destination what you want to use ..
then box it up and Mail it back before you leave!

Ive seen people put five layers of cloths on in the winter and board the plane , the American public has way more power than they wil ever realize . Public opinion can alter any trend .

Places I go frequently, I have gotten friends to store a bag...I store several bags myself. we keep an eye out for sales, and sizes...several of us shop thrift stores, and keep things on hand.

I travel light anyway. I generally buy stuff when I get there that I wouldn't mind leaving. I hate a lot of luggage.

I've only travelled by car (or ferry, but in a car), so it would be cheaper to bring the luggage... I think it could be cheaper on an extended trip.
I never over-pack because I know I'll most likely end up buying more clothing and toiletries.

Just about is. I sometimes ship things ahead just to keep from having to take them on the plane.

I've had that experience..... went to Bulgaria last May, Lufthansa lost ALL of our luggage (except the carry-ons, of course). They give you a little ditty-bag with some "essentials" that aren't worth a crap. After we checked into our hotel in Sofia, we had to go buy everything we needed. We were going to leave very early the next morning to drive to Vratsa to pick up our newest daughter from the orphanage so we had to buy everything for her as well (Shoes, socks, clothes, etc. - they don't let you take them out in anything that belongs to the orphanage, the items are needed for the other kids).

When all was said and done, we spent about $400.00. Some items are outrageous while others are dirt cheap. We had to stay for 2 weeks, we had packed enough for that length of time, but only bought enough for 3 days for each of us (my 11 year old son went with us) so we had to make use of the hotel's laundry and dry cleaning service which added considerably to the expense.

On the bright side, they brought our luggage to our hotel 2 days before we were scheduled to leave...... and then lost it for another 2 days after we returned home. My advice, don't fly Lufthansa. The lost luggage was the highlight of their 'service'.

    Last trip:
1 brand new suitcase destroyed (trashed the zipper)
2 $30 per checked bag each way
    adds up really fast

Too many clothes to buy, but I guess it depends on how long you're staying. But that is an interesting thought. Never thought about it before...LOL.

but mailing clothes in advance would be cheaper. The best solution is to have a relative who wears your sizes...like my son who provides all of my hand-me-ups anyway.

depending on where you go. When I go to a tropical location I literally wear a bikini and flip flops the entire time, but pack about 100 other items that never get used.

For some airlines. Thank goodness Southwest still allows a free checked bag and free carry-on.

Usually not, though it depends what would be in your luggage, how much these items would cost where you are going, how much luggage you have, and which company you are travelling with.

No Way! Most bags cost from around $20-50 and up to $150 for a hugely oversized bag. So in most cases the cost is the same as 1 tshirt or in the case of a giant bag, a pair of jeans. The airlines will pay up to $5000 for lost luggage because if you think about it and add up the value of what you pack to travel it's alot. I always carry on my cosmetics and jewelry but imagine the people that check it, that alone is $100's to $1000's. It sure would be fun to be able to afford to not pack and just buy new stuff when you get where your'e going!
