World's Water Supply Is Under Pressure

The world's water supply is being strained by climate change and the growing food, energy and sanitary needs of a fast-growing population, according to a United Nations study that calls for a radical rethink of policies to manage competing claims.

"Freshwater is not being used sustainably," UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said in a statement. "Accurate information remains disparate, and management is fragmented ... the future is increasingly uncertain and risks are set to deepen."

It says that demand from agriculture, which already sucks up around 70 percent of freshwater used globally, is likely to rise by at least 19 percent by 2050 as the world's population swells an estimated 2 billion people to 9 billion.

This problem has been known for approx 25 years and coming to bear. The CIA in one of their reports on global future reported that water problems would grow to the point where countries would go to war for water. What people forget is the US west of the Mississippi is semi arid and desert. Los Angeles in the 20"s first came into where they were running out of water and Mulholland as an engineer built a viaduct system to bring water. So you built and have more people than the system can handle. Pheonix is another problem and definitely Las Vegas as they have only water source. So we are going to have a battle where the choice is food or people as the water can't be used both places.

Around the world our fresh water supply is under EXTREME demand. With the melting of the glaciers and year round snow capped mountains as well as the polar caps the less than 3% of the total water on the planet that is fresh will be reduced to less that 1/2 of one percent of the total water of our planet. That means we will have EVEN LESS water to divide up. Cities like Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angelos are going to be hard pressed unless they start building major sized pipelines for salt water to be brought inland to be deselenized by nuclear reactors or solar boilers for fresh water. Crops will be a thing of the past in all the major growing areas of Arizona and Southern California.

YEP, lots of fun ahead. Glad I moved to where I am sitting on top of a very nice aquifier.
