I have had my fair share of first hand experience w/alcoholics, it's a very devastating sickness. Nothing that can be done, they have to want to change otherwise it will never work.

I give them cash and follow them up to ensure that they constructed a nice house out of it.

When I have money to give and when it's handy.

First, it's unwise to count your money in public. Second.. I recall giving a man on a pier $5. Just as I was walking away his friend came up. He told his friend that he had already made $142, and it was just into the afternoon. I didn't make that much! Another time I gave a man $2, he was so thankful that I felt guilty and waited the next day to catch him again, that time giving him enough for breakfast. The man held onto my hand, squeezing it and saying thank you repeatedly.

I'm not fond of the arrogant, guilt trip replies. It's your money. You earned it so you have every right to decide what to do with it. Especially when we can all make any self-serving claims that we want that can possibly benefit us. You don't need an excuse.. Best advice to EVERYONE here is to ask how you would feel in the other person's shoes. Also not to demand from others what you don't demand of yourself, and vise versa.....

The fact is that if someone who was hungry approached me outside a McDonalds, I'd buy them a whole meal. Hell, if they caught me on the way inside to Walmart I might even buy them a pair of jeans or a shirt or shoes. Instead, I only ever see them asking for money.

If they really are homeless, and not pretending to be just so they could get money.

I always give them food. I like to know what my money goes to and I surely don't want to be a part of enabling a drug/alcohol habit. Bringing them hot food saves them the walk to the restaurant anyway, so its a win win!

HOUSTON DOWNTOWN IS full of homeless. i have been berated for not giving them money. called a bitch by a homeless guy for not giving money. ..so they can continue the lifestyle of drinking and living on the street? that's called enabling ...i have kids at homem that need my paycheck. just because i decide to have a job and provide for my family does not mean i owe anyone a couple of bucks just because i will not "miss some loose change".. it disgusts me and i refuse to help someone continue to live a crap lifestyle.

I wouldn't mind lending a little bit of money to the homeless to help them get to where they are going.

Are you kidding? Where I live the same people have been homeless for the last fifteen years and have no disabilities... They panhandle downtown. and on the Purdue campus... BUMS get a job!!! The local shelter just keeps giving in to them and lets them in year after year... Its crazy...

I don't have the money to spare... I need my money to pay my bills so I won't be homeless...

Going to work everyday... most weekends too.. is a lot harder than standing on a corner with a sign or cup in one's hand... I work with several people who are permanently disabled (missing legs/ in wheelchairs) who come to work everyday... So that "disabled excuse" won't fly with me...

I treasure every penny I earn and tend to distribute my money wisely...

Most of those "homeless" people are con artists with substance abuse problems who don't care to be helped... but more power to the people who will let loose their money to the "homeless" for empty gains...

And the local government provides the homeless with everything they need... food, clothes, shelter, education and money... WE, the tax payer, already give money to the "homeless" through certain taxes and charities... The only catch is the homeless have to FOLLOW RULES to receive these things... and as I stated earlier... the "homeless" person standing on the corner is most likely a substance abuser who don't want to or don't care to FOLLOW RULES...

I would never give them $600.00. Most of them are mentally ill. They might buy lots of drugs and alcohol and kill themselves. I give them enough money for a meal and tell them that "Jesus" loves them. I have gotten unbelievable answers from them! Most of them are usually ecstatic and very grateful to God.

I walk most of the time and I don't carry cash on me, except on rare occasions and then it is only the bare minimum I need for the task at hand.

It's a waste giving money to the homeless. It's much better to it to organizations that help the homeless. They help the mentally ill to get back on their meds. They provide food and shelter. The Salvation Army is the best.

If you have an extra dollar and give it to a homeless person who should care one way or another. It is not coming from your pocket. You go by what your heart leads you to.

yep. Not 600 dollars obviously. But I work at a soup kitchen and build houses for a living and sometimes give them money. I can't believe how many people say "they're addicts your only feeding their craving for drugs and blah blah blah". The homeless are still people! And no matter WHO you meet, they always know more about something than you. respect all and What they have to say and do not criticize what it be their situation, they are only human. anybody who says they are perfect lose all of my respect.
