Woman Goes 18 Months Without Shaving Armpits: Gross or Great?

If there's one beauty ritual that almost all women partake in, it's shaving their armpits while they're in the shower. But graduate student Emer O'Toole from Dublin decided to examine why she felt she had to be hair-free -- and stopped shaving 18 months ago, The Daily Mail reports.

pits

"I started examining my own relationship with my body, and my body hair," she told "This Morning." She continued, "Why did I feel I had to shave? I thought back to when I first started shaving. When I sprouted hair at 14, I didn't think, 'Will I shave or not?' I just knew I had to shave it off."

Over a year later, O'Toole says she's mostly OK with her armpit and leg hair. "Over the past 18 months, if I've felt awkward in a certain outfit that shows my hairy armpits, I've started to examine where my confidence comes from. If it's my looks, and my self-esteem is linked to that, then I've realized I need to find other sources for that confidence. Your looks aren't with you when you wake up in the morning if you have to put your makeup on first. And they don't stay with you as you age."

And she says guys are totally fine with her fuzzy pits, but women are pretty grossed out by it. Do you think women should feel free to go without shaving their armpits? Or is it a beauty must-do?

If that is her preference, so what? If you bathe, you won't smell, hair or not. Sometimes it's good to question societal conventions. Good for her for having the courage to do just that.

Americans are always so quick to judge other cultures. That is what is "gross."

So should women (and men for that matter) shave off the hair on their heads too?

Ever see the yellow stuff under a woman's armpit? Yeah, that's a pool of microbes which grew under the skin because there was nothing keeping it away form the body.

Either shave or cover up! "The bikini area" is considered an acceptable shaving site so they can uncover more and more. Better to shave the pits and cover the bikini.

We were given eyebrows and eyelashes to protect the eyes from foreign objects. Nasal hairs, ditto. Hair on the head helps protect the body's control tower. But what is the purpose for hairy armpits? All it does is collect perspiration, which deteriorates rapidly and starts smelling.

    Armpit hair does these things:
    1) Keeps microbes away from the skin, where they can form a colony. Ever noticed a yellowish tinge to underarm skin? That's a microbe colony underneath the skin.
    2) Protects against friction. Those irritating armpit rashes are far less common with hair.
    3) Traps pheromones to attract a sexual mate. This use has been nullified by deodorants and perfumes.

I don't shave my pits, but I also don't wear bathing suits or sleeveless shirts. No one has to deal with it but me, so what's the point?

Actually, it's the ritual of shaving that isn't natural. Armpit hair comes in on its own. It's a CHOICE of whether you shave it, not a requirement.

TRIM (with clippers) is only needed. Close-shaving is overkill. I do it. That "hair" holds odors, not the skin. Wahl peanut hair clipper

here, here .... hair (especially more than a 1/2 long) is an excellent media for growth of microbes

Perhaps. But the skin traps microbes if there is no hair. If your pits have ever had a yellowish tinge, they've had a microbial colony in them.

Rubbing alcohol, 50% or 70%- solves that, and refreshes.
  • Jayfeather chas 2012/05/09 00:44:03

True, but should one even need to rub acohol in the armpits to prevent infection? Doesn't that say to you "hmm, special treatment is needed to prevent issues, maybe I shouldn't do this?"

I still think it should be a red flag when you have to rub alcohol in your pits.

UGH!!! Women not shaving their legs is bad enough, but hairy pits look really unkempt. It's nothing to do with self confidence, and everything to do with pride in one's appearance and good grooming. Shaved pits look untidy and it is harder to keep smelling fresh. Deodorants don't work so well on hair.

though you see if you raise one generation as you were raised (to think women have to shave) to think its perfectly normal not to shave (I mean honestly it IS normal lol) they would find it strange to see shaved pits and this poll would be the reverse its entirely societal and it changes with generations to.

Hell the only reason I truly shave my face is because its itchy not because I hate the idea of a beard lol

That's totally up to her and not for me or anyone else to criticize or judge. My underarm hair makes my deodorant stop working, and I end up using 3 times the amount. So I make sure to keep it bare.

Although it seems common now, pit scraping for regular women only really took off in the early 20th Century. The Muslims began it for both men and women around the 5th or 6th Century.

If the person, male or female washes regularly, I have nothing against hairy pits or legs. Stubble, on the other hand (or leg, or pit), sucks rocks.

Wouldn't it be nice if the media weren't telling us what does and does not make an attractive person? If it weren't for the media, I would have no idea that it is "gross" for a woman to not shave her armpits, legs, and pubic area.

The only argument I could see to having hair in erogenous zones would be that the purpose of this hair is to capture odors and pheremones that the opposite sex would find attractive. I feel like this would be necessary and self-balancing if we didn't wear clothes all the time. With clothing, however, body hair can gather odors (and their causal bacteria) in excess causing potential problems. Just one thought.

    Why ever could that be?
