Woman Goes 18 Months Without Shaving Armpits: Gross or Great?

If there's one beauty ritual that almost all women partake in, it's shaving their armpits while they're in the shower. But graduate student Emer O'Toole from Dublin decided to examine why she felt she had to be hair-free -- and stopped shaving 18 months ago, The Daily Mail reports.

pits

"I started examining my own relationship with my body, and my body hair," she told "This Morning." She continued, "Why did I feel I had to shave? I thought back to when I first started shaving. When I sprouted hair at 14, I didn't think, 'Will I shave or not?' I just knew I had to shave it off."

Over a year later, O'Toole says she's mostly OK with her armpit and leg hair. "Over the past 18 months, if I've felt awkward in a certain outfit that shows my hairy armpits, I've started to examine where my confidence comes from. If it's my looks, and my self-esteem is linked to that, then I've realized I need to find other sources for that confidence. Your looks aren't with you when you wake up in the morning if you have to put your makeup on first. And they don't stay with you as you age."

And she says guys are totally fine with her fuzzy pits, but women are pretty grossed out by it. Do you think women should feel free to go without shaving their armpits? Or is it a beauty must-do?

If that is her preference, so what? If you bathe, you won't smell, hair or not. Sometimes it's good to question societal conventions. Good for her for having the courage to do just that.

Americans are always so quick to judge other cultures. That is what is "gross."

I don't do drugs of any kind.

I've seen hairier. The point is, there is nothing which says women MUST shave. Women naturally have body hair, and you are going against Nature when you remove it. There is no reason why women should shave. They just do it because years of manipulation have caused them to lose their common sense.

    A woman's body hair? "Ew, gross!" A man's body hair? "A-OK!"
Each gender has natural body hair, women are just held to a ridiculously higher standard of grooming & societal pressure. If she doesn't want to shave, so be it! And if she want to shave it? That's fine too. Dear lord people, at least find something more interesting to freak out over some girl's armpits.

Wth. We are all mammals! Mammals have hair. So, you want to shave off your hair on your head? Yes, yes it's HAIR, but why can't our other parts have hair? Is there something wrong? Is it poisonous? Who cares? Besides, I think our society these days has too much concern with looks and they don't look on the inside too often. :/

I personally find it disgusting and not at all feminine, but there is no law against it. She certainly must get some shocked looks from people when she raises her arms up. I would not have the confidence to handle all the stares or snide remarks, but if she does, good for her.

Ummm, why is it ok for guys and not girls? Is there some secret genetic code which says "girls must grow armpit hair, only to shave it off, but guys can leave it." I think not. It is simply a matter of choice, and there is no reason why it should be ok for guys and not girls.

It is a matter of choice and whatever floats your boat. In my personal opinion, having arm pit hair is a sign of manhood. As My little brother and cousins were hitting puberty they bragging about their "arm pit hair" whenever they only had three coming in. She can do whatever she wants and I won't judge her personality on it. I'm not that type of person. It's just my opinion that men should have arm pit hair because it's very masculin and women should not

As I've stated in past comments, I'm a firm believer in whatever you do with your own body is up to you. So long as another is not injured in any way, who am I. :) Society likes to think it has the right to dictate what is or isn't proper and hairy women isn't. Why.. who knows... it's natural for the body to grow it and at some point in our ancestral roots, that hair held value. Since we still grow it.. it still should. So enjoy your hair.. so long as the person next to you doesn't pass out when the wind blows their way, you're fine!

Shaving isn't old fashioned. it started in the early-mid 1900s, when razor companies decided it would be ok to victimise women for the sake of money.

Hair retains sweat, thus without more extensive hygiene- or at least stronger deoderant- there will be more body odor.

So every guy in the country and indeed, the world that doesn't choose to shave their pits, but also doesn't smell of body odor from exertion and sweat collection by the hair... what's your reasoning for that?
  • king4wd Christ ... 2012/05/08 16:18:59

As I said- stronger deodorant. Men's deodorants are more potent than women's products. Just like the old tag line "Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman"

I bathe regularly. It isn't the sweat that stinks, it's the bacteria. Clean off the bacteria, and you don't get stinky.

Except for the few women with injuries or certain medical situations that make shaving
way too complicated, all women should be required to shave. The only hair most women
and girls need anywhere on their bodies is a good thick mane of hair on their scalps, plus
properly groomed eyebrows and eyelashes. ( In other words, no deltans ). This is just the right amount of hair that most women and girls require to be feminine and also be properly civilized as well. All other hair should be strictly forbidden on women and girls. This includes armpit hair, facial hair, arm hair, leg hair, pubic hair, back hair, chest hair, buttock hair, foot hair, etc. With the exception of properly groomed facial hair, the same standards
should be rigiourously enforced on the majority of men and boys as well, in order to be
properly civilized and balance things out for the women and girls. After all, the truth remains, that the women and girls richly deserve a level playing field from the men and boys. In other words, gentlemen, being fair to the fairer sex should be mandatory, and not
optional, in regards to this issue.

So you'd attempt to enforce laws or regulations that point out that people are now required to do certain things with their bodies, regardless of their personal preference?
  • TKramar Christ ... 2012/05/12 19:18:10 (edited)

Just so you'd have hairless women, you'd make men shave...but not the other way around?

It's still not fair, because some guys prefer hairy women. You are making it unfair to all of us who like the natural look, and unfair to woman who prefer to be natural. Therefore, such laws would not work in the way you would intend them to. Plus, such extreme, Nazi-like policies will open the door for even worse regulations.
