If that is her preference, so what? If you bathe, you won't smell, hair or not. Sometimes it's good to question societal conventions. Good for her for having the courage to do just that.
Americans are always so quick to judge other cultures. That is what is "gross."

If there's one beauty ritual that almost all women partake in, it's shaving their armpits while they're in the shower. But graduate student Emer O'Toole from Dublin decided to examine why she felt she had to be hair-free -- and stopped shaving 18 months ago, The Daily Mail reports.

"I started examining my own relationship with my body, and my body hair," she told "This Morning." She continued, "Why did I feel I had to shave? I thought back to when I first started shaving. When I sprouted hair at 14, I didn't think, 'Will I shave or not?' I just knew I had to shave it off."
Over a year later, O'Toole says she's mostly OK with her armpit and leg hair. "Over the past 18 months, if I've felt awkward in a certain outfit that shows my hairy armpits, I've started to examine where my confidence comes from. If it's my looks, and my self-esteem is linked to that, then I've realized I need to find other sources for that confidence. Your looks aren't with you when you wake up in the morning if you have to put your makeup on first. And they don't stay with you as you age."

And she says guys are totally fine with her fuzzy pits, but women are pretty grossed out by it. Do you think women should feel free to go without shaving their armpits? Or is it a beauty must-do?

Great

Personally I love the look.
I have had moments in the recent months wherein I have let my hair on the body grow and lose my self esteem too...
In the past, I have gone 20 odd years without shaving or waxing and its fun but if you really want to be a topic of discussion for your hair, its ideal.
I know I have been made fun of and openly by everyone, friends, colleagues and co-worker and even the husband (the worst) as they put a blot on my femininity.
None the less, I prefer to take it off for hygiene purposes rather than fashion, as I now bleed and itch if I don't clean myself up. Whole body that is not just armpits...
If your body odour is good, great, if you have terrible body odour, god help you as I know of a person, female who just has to lift her hands and the world would run for cover.... Its a lot thicker as she hasnot done it in 40-50 odd years....
So its great with the I am Hairy and I am proud of it as I do that myself but not because I can but because I was born that way....
Leave the terribly harsh judgement at the mirror, will you?
Just like if you grow out the hair on your head it doesn't mean you go and leave it unwashed.
That, and there are some rather good bath moisturizers for everyone.
I do not think I have had any serious BO in years...but I do wash my hair everyday and use anti perspirant.
The first direct reference to the specific topic at hand is contained in Ovid's Art of Love, written just before the birth of Christ: "Shall I warn you to keep the rank goat out of your armpits? Warn you to keep your legs free of coarse bristling hair?"
In America not until sleeveless dresses become popular did it become the thing to do, and leg shaving began around the time women started showing their legs.
I will go days without make up. I rarely do my hair, it's always natural and I don't dye it. I will wear sweat pants and baggy t-shirts... but body hair.... that's something I'm uncomfortable with.
But I personally don't really like armpit hair on anyone--women or men. :s
