Woman Goes 18 Months Without Shaving Armpits: Gross or Great?

If there's one beauty ritual that almost all women partake in, it's shaving their armpits while they're in the shower. But graduate student Emer O'Toole from Dublin decided to examine why she felt she had to be hair-free -- and stopped shaving 18 months ago, The Daily Mail reports.

pits

"I started examining my own relationship with my body, and my body hair," she told "This Morning." She continued, "Why did I feel I had to shave? I thought back to when I first started shaving. When I sprouted hair at 14, I didn't think, 'Will I shave or not?' I just knew I had to shave it off."

Over a year later, O'Toole says she's mostly OK with her armpit and leg hair. "Over the past 18 months, if I've felt awkward in a certain outfit that shows my hairy armpits, I've started to examine where my confidence comes from. If it's my looks, and my self-esteem is linked to that, then I've realized I need to find other sources for that confidence. Your looks aren't with you when you wake up in the morning if you have to put your makeup on first. And they don't stay with you as you age."

And she says guys are totally fine with her fuzzy pits, but women are pretty grossed out by it. Do you think women should feel free to go without shaving their armpits? Or is it a beauty must-do?

If that is her preference, so what? If you bathe, you won't smell, hair or not. Sometimes it's good to question societal conventions. Good for her for having the courage to do just that.

Americans are always so quick to judge other cultures. That is what is "gross."

It just looks ugly, and I remember the last time it was discussed during the hippie era. Doesn't matter with friends, but for dating it's a total turnoff. Love shaved legs and pubes as well. I'm fair about it; I do the same thing.

It's her body and she can do what she wants so its whatever, I can go certain amount of time without shaving (I hardly shave at all during winter) but its not necessary for us to judge anybody else's body hair!

And another thing: why the hell are women expected to be hair-free? Why the hell don't guys shave their armpits and legs ?

Personally, I find it gross, but if this is what she wants to do, then okay, that's her choice. As for guys being okay with it, I don't know many guys that would be truly okay with it.

Just my Personal like or dislike. I grew up in the late 60s and 70s and believe me, this is not the first time this has come around. Some of the girls in the free love culture did this too. Didn't keep us from being friends, but not to my personal taste. But if it is good for her then who are we to say its bad. Again, not my personal preference.

The hair harbors germs and causes body odor. How awful!

Have you ever seen a yellowish tinge to your underarms? That yellowish tinge signifies a colony of microbes which has made itself a cozy home beneath your skin.

That's not true. Body hair prevents fungus. Be smelly or not doesn't depends on shaving, but if the person keeps clean or not.

Anything "different" is deemed wrong especially when it comes to this. It's hair...get over it. If you don't like it, don't look at or date her or anyone like her, also, just don't do it yourself. Au Natural is beautiful no matter what anyone else thinks.

Of course, women should be free to shave or not, but it's still gross. Not only armpits, but remove ALL pubic hair while your at it. And, guys, let's lose the back and chest hair, too!

Because mature women and men both have it, so by removing it, you make them appear prepubescent.

Most men don't shave them. It's not gross. People only think it is because that's what they're taught to believe.

And what is your opinion based on? The standards of the society in which you were raised. You're more of a sheep than you care to admit, apparently.

where I live, we have two seasons, winter, and not winter... winter lasts about 7 months of the year...
I have no problem going all winter without shaving my legs, but the pits must be shaved at least once a week.

just because a scientist says we are animals doesn't make it so! if we whre animals we would only do animal things! but as you can tell we don't! we have a soul element which sets us apart! i do not know many animals that can make computers, make cell phones, wage war against other animals....over seas! we are different, if you seriously can't see that, your stupid! just like the scientists who try to say we are animals!

No. A Dumb Ass answers a question with a question. A Smart Person explains something if someone asks a question. I was simply curious as to why you believe shaving was invented. So, how about it. Why were the razor and shaving invented?
  • lani Jayfeather 2012/05/29 14:24:39

Well Shaving Implements have been around since about 3000 BC, it is the most popular grooming tool ever invented. Invented for appearance and grooming
