He was the perfect man, he gave her all his money, he dressed the way she wanted and he didn't say a thing.

Condolences. I guess the spirit remained alive and made her feel he was still with her.

    Why wasn't "confusion" an option?

Of course it was for the money. And in a way I understand. However, keeping a corpse sitting around in a chair is a sign of a sick mind.

Yeah the money was probably a reason, but I think her initial thought was for love. I deal with many semi-shut it elderly, and they are all the same in one respect...they are unbearably lonely.

She did commit fraud by cashing his checks, but she also dressed him and sat with him and talked with him. It was probably easier to deal with the smell than the emotions.

There should be a third option; who cares? She did it, and it's wrong.

Going with love because, appropriate options do not exist.. She was certainly not mentally stable if she a)lived with a decomposing body, ....the smell alone would have had to be unbearable....and I have smelled my fair share of "Decomps" before.
    b) Cleaned that body every day.
She just isn't right in the head.

cashing the checks was a "dead" give away...and just b/c someone's old, doesn't mean they're sweet and nice

I will go with love. However the real answer is neither. She is clearly not sane. Dressing and taking care of a decomposing body for a year is just nasty.

She did it for money and left him in the chair so she could do short stint in a mental hospital.

If done strictly for love why continue to cash his social security, pension, and veteran benefit checks?! I think that more clearly explains the motives behind her actions, along with being a little crazy to keep a corpse in the home for several months!

Apparently, including cleaning and dressing a corpse that it sitting in the living room recliner! She claims she did it because she didn't want to be alone, but a dead body still means you're alone, heck get a mannequin!
