AMESBURY, Mass. -- A Massachusetts woman who got a bill for $73 from the state of New Jersey for a decades-old debt says she has no intention of paying.
Alice Mainville, of Amesbury, got a letter recently telling her she owes New Jersey's Department of Labor $73 because it gave her too much money in an unemployment check 35 years ago.
Mainville, who moved to Massachusetts after high school, says she won't pay because New Jersey officials have not explained how they concluded she owes the money.
New Jersey Department of Labor spokeswoman Kerri Gatling says there is no bad debt "write-off" in unemployment insurance law.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/30/alice-mainville-debt...

I should also point out that in my case, while they have been sending a letter every 3 months for the past 5 years, they have never once attempted to contact me by phone, at my place of employment, by certified mail, or by serving me court papers. In other words, debt collection attempts like this are usually fishy and suspect. Anyone with a decent printer in their basement can make a very convincing letter, especially if they steal any of your information.
Let them wait another 35 years for the money, maybe.
And after waiting 35 years to send a bill, I suspect that they want paid in 30 days.
This just shows how awful the government way can get.
Especially for an amount that NJ can't explain but wants paid.
