Willow Smith's Dress: Age Appropriate, or Too Grown-Up?

She's only 11 years old, but Willow Smith looked like quite the little lady at Saturday's BET Honors event in Washington. Willow would have fit in at the Golden Globes in her romantic floor-length yellow gown, tied at the waist. And it also would have been hard for her to "whip her hair" in this glamorous updo.

willow

Willow -- the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith -- is best known for her hit debut single "Whip My Hair." She's currently promoting her song "Fireball" featuring Nicki Minaj, and she'll release her self-titled, debut album on April 3 (the album will include "Fireball"). She'll also play Annie in this year's remake of "Annie."

Willow Smith is known for her quirky style, but her yellow dress actually suited the event honoring Stevie Wonder, Maya Angelou, Spike Lee and Mariah Carey. Michelle Obama was also in attendance, along with Aretha Franklin. However, Willow showed a hint of her signature style by wearing a ton of colorful bracelets for her presenting gig.

The spunky tween has come a long way since her film debut in 2007's "I Am Legend," but is she growing up too fast? What do you think of her yellow dress?

Here goes my opinion: By "too grown up" I do NOT mean that the dress is too sexy or its trying to attract pedophiles or whetever. The girl is 11 years old. Yeah, she is at an event where people dress up. The girl's entire career and attitude is "too grown up", right along with her outfit. I feel sorry for her. She needs to be a normal kid and enjoy it while she can. Her parents should be ashamed of themselves for throwing her into a very adult, cut-throat industry. I'm sure her grades are good and I bet she has plenty of friends. I just think she should act like a kid and dress like a kid. That's all.

I don't see anything wrong with the dress, she's not revealing anything...it's not too lowcut or too tight, so what's the problem?...I see young girls dress like that when they're going to church....

No one will ever be satisfied with how celebrities dress their kids or how they let their kids dress. If this was a boy in a suit/tux I bet it wouldn't be a problem, imo it seems like more people are critical towards girls.

I've seen 7 year old pageant gowns much more "grown up" than this. I think its the length that are making people skeptical, but in all honesty it is a very modest dress. Besides, what else would one wear to a formal event like this?

I'm sure Willow felt very pretty in this flowing dress, and she looks beautiful in it.

She looks lovely in that dress,I fail to see why anyone would pick on an 11yr old girl. I see far worse dressed young ladies around.

There absolutely nothing revealing or inappropriate about it, it's just the style is not suited for her age. About a foot shorter, maybe. Never in a million years would I have been allowed to wear those shoes when I was her age lol

Why can't younger girls wear long dresses? :/ Long dresses are in fashion at the moment.

Maybe it's just me but It's just the style of the dress I've seen girls wear that are 10-20 years her senior. My mother is semstress, and like I said, I've never seen a dress in this style made for an eleven year old girl. What is that, six grade? Elementary school in some places in the US. My little sister is around her age, no way would she be allowed wear that dress. It's too "grown" as we say here. long belted dress

Too grown up? Its loose, it's floor length and it doesn't show any clevage. When I saw this question I expected like a tiny, too-tight, shoulderless tube-dress; then I would have understood what would have made it too grown up. But this? It's incredibly modest. Really. In what nation and century is this dress inappropriate for a girl her age?

I don't think it's bad at all, and I love that someone else recognizes that something being "too grown up" doesn't equate to "waltzing around in as little cloth as possible." The way I see it, it was a formal event, and this was an excellent choice on Willow's part.

    My point is this;

In a world where young girls are constantly hyper-sexualized, and a young celeb wears something that's actually demur, yet people STILL feel the need to criticize her, then what do they think she she should be wearing that would be "appropriate?"

    Oversized baby clothes?

Compared to some really inappropriate apparel Ive seen some preteens & teens wear, I find nothing wrong with her choice.
  • Lucas Melizmatic 2012/01/17 03:57:21
