ABC reports that Walmart has unleashed a newer, tinier corporate mini-monster on a the rural Arkansas town of Gentry.

Introducing Walmart Express.

The long, narrow concrete box, which features a powder-blue Walmart Express sign, is less than one-tenth of the size of a super center. The store, which has exposed pipes and yellow walls, carries most of the basics that its bigger cousin carries, from bacon and milk to socks and DVDs.

Walmart is already planning up to 20 more Walmart Express stores in select areas, including an experimental Express store in urban Chicago.

The Yes/No poses a false dichotomy. Yes, they probably will catch on in some locations, no in others. As for eventual ubiquity on the order of WallyWorld superstores? I'm really undecided. Not enough data to extract a trend.

I'll drop by the one in Gentry sometime, when I happen to be in the area, and check it out, though.

Maybe in areas where there isn't a Walmart every 5 miles already, it might catch on. I think it depends on more of what they sell than anything.

I think it is a great for the rural areas, especially when Walmart want the exposures and don't want to open a "super" store..This will make it like another converience store.

It's just like when Tesco's unleashed a small store in my town. It's not that much good a quality store, and replaced a store which sold some beautiful antiques, decorations for your mantelpiece, clothes and books, known as Elmers Arcade. I hate it when huge corporate companies take over these stores that everyone likes and replacing it with something cheap that I could get at even better value down at our local store, Waitrose. I used to like looking through the window to see glittering glass and china vases and sculptures, wooden and cloth dolls, and handwoven objects. Now when I look in where it used to be I see rows of white shelves and bright, sterile lights that doesn't benefit the atmosphere. And it's always cold in though, no matter what you're wearing, and however far you are from the freezers.
After more Tesco stores started popping up around England, people began protesting. And I don't blame them. The fact that huge corporations replace good old corner shops, shops that you are familiar with, shops you go into everyday and greet the shop owners who you are good friends with. That doesn't really happen in a supermarket. All they do is want to make money out of you, which is not surprising seeing as most people want to make money when they set up a store. If small shops from big companies keep replacing these wonderful friendly corner and other stores like them, there's going to be more than a few angry faces around.

Why did you and all the other folks stop supporting those "stores that everyone likes"? You speak so glowingly about them but the bottom line is you and the other customers made the choice to buy from Tesco instead. Tesco did not replace those "good old corner shops", you did.

I suppose in some towns they might thrive. Walmart has neighborhood grocery stores in many cities, too. In Las Vegas it's reported that they aren't doing so good. People like the super centers where they can get what they need in one stop.

I am guessing that it will, especially when people know what they want and don't feel like walking all over one of the giant stores to get it. I would imagine it will give dollar stores and independent small stores a run for their money.
